I would say mules (mulas).
When I visited Kaprolat & Hasselman hills in Karelia, we found several muleshoes. They must have had a hard time there.
Swamp in summer, a meter or two with loose snow in winter and down to -40c!

Servus,
I just finised reading the 5 JG Div history by Reinicke and he wrote about when the Division was retreating to the Oder in '45 they lost some of the Horses that had been with theem since they left France in january '42. Hard to believe the horses could have come through all that.

As you can see from the photos, the Germans treated their horses and mules well. So I have no problem believe that this is true.
I`ve operated with "tragtiere" in the army,in northern Norway, this animals are almost able to climb trees. When trated well they last "forewer".

anyone got any idea how many horses died in ww2 i bet it's a staggering figure?
