meaning of chevrons on left sleeve ? (Waffen-SS)

Post by RJH57 »

attached is photo of my father (on the left), 2nd Co, I Btn, 1 SS Panzergrenadier Rgt "LAH", in Russia, summer 1943. I know Wafffen-SS rank insignia were on their uniform's left collar tab so can anyone please tell me the significance of the chevrons on his left sleeve?

ok thanks HN. I can see the Rottenfuehrer bars on his collar tab, I did not know that Rottenfuehrer chevrons on the sleeve were also worn by men of that rank.

Correct.

A certain chevron similar to Gefreiter was worn on the right sleeve; it was to signify the wearer was considered an "Altkaempfer" or "old fighter", a single-chevron stripe distinction created for the longtime members of the Nazi Party. You will see photos of old Nazi supporters like Sepp Dietrich wearing his--on his general's tunic. I'm not the total expert--on anything--just wanted to add this info.
