Updates, changes and plans for Feldgrau.net and Feldgrau.com.

Feldgrau.com and .net will be moving over soon

Postby Jason Pipes » Mon Mar 17, 2008 11:38 pm

This message is to let everyone know that within the next few days to a week or so Feldgrau will be moving over to an entirely new server. In so doing various sections of the site may be down or unavailable, things may look a little weird (we don't think so but in case they do you've been warned), and/or the forum may be closed for a few hours or a day or so. Nothing to worry about but just be aware for when these things take place. I will make do my best to make another announcement when the switch is actually taking place.

A word of thanks is in order to all those people who donated to help us make this dramatic and important move to a bigger, better, and faster new server. Without the help of many kind members of Feldgrau the move would not yet have taken place. Through the help of many members we were able to raise enough funds to pay for a very powerful new machine that will serve Feldgrau for many years into the future. Thanks to each and every person that helped make this happen!

I hope feldgrau will not make the same mistake like the Axis History Forum, the new forum that they have is pretty ugly, I am talking about the layout.

At first the move will be to a new server and things will remain largely the same as they are now for both Feldgrau.com and .net, only thereafter will we upgrade the forum to a new version. When we do we will retain the current look and feel of the forum.

Thanks for your feedback!

Site was closed for awhile today while we started the server move. We are back now but will be offline again starting tomorrow very early morning when the move will continue.

Just another quick warning. There is a chance when the site goes down to move over to the new server it may go entirely offline for awhile, as in file not found errors and blank screens. If this happens don't worry unless it lasts for many days on end (it won't).

Hello Jason!

I just noticed that after the server move, many (all?) names in Forum posts that have an umlaut, ü, ä, ö has been replaced with a black dot of some kind. Is this effect permanent? I, for one will correct my own posts (no, I'm not a spelling maniac! ) now and then, i e whenever I read them...

We saw that error and are working on fixing them this weekend.

So, that looks like a success from where I stand. Speed is up, threads are intact, avatars show up correct, excellent.

'Tis somewhat blue though, (would have added a smiley here if I could find them!). Will you switch back to old grey skin (that I liked very much, clean and businesslike) or maybe a true Feldgrau-skin (thumbs-up icon here!)

Blue-regards,

Paul

Feldgrau... Interesting idea. Where'd you get that though? :D

Actually, Jason, if you're going to be experimenting, then a Feldgrau shade might be a worthy test!

Hello again Jason and Tom!

Is it possible to provide the "umlaut" characters as well as the german "double-S" where the smiley characters are when you writing a post/reply? This service exists in other forums and I think it's a good idea, especially for all non-german, non-scandinavian members whose pc keyboards doesn't provide these characters as a standard.

Just a thought,

And while I'm at it, my last three posts (this non-important one included) doesn't count in to my "post total"... Not that it's that important but still...

Yes Jason, the new Forum is looking very good! Just one question though... Why is it that the possibility to edit my own posts dissapears almost immediately? I for one find the edit function quite useful... When to correct an obvious error or for that matter when new information that needs to be added and the best place is in an original/older post... For me personally, it's only been a matter of minor changes and/or corrections of my own posts.

So now I wonder, have the "edit" function been that mis-used that the possibility therefore has been removed? Or have I just missed something?

With best regards,
