Was ist Glühwein????

Post by John W. Howard »

Okay guys:
I just saw a reference to Glühwein in a German film set in Köln. It did not look like wine to me, more like beer. Can anyone help me out??? Best wishes.

John: Glühwein is a must at Christmas. You can buy it at Cost Plus World Market, and some higher quality supermarkets. They sell it at Market of Choice here in Eugene. I bet there are some German markets in Portland where you can find it. The wine they use to make it isn't the best, but the spices are really what make it fun. There's also a non-alcoholic version called "Kinderpunch."

Yes, and I will go for one, two or three Glühwein now on our lovely Christkindlmarkt in Salzburg.

Cheers forum friends!,
Christoph

Thanks for that photo, Christoph!

The only Weihnachtsmarkt I ever visited was one evening in Stuttgart. It was almost magical! The smell of pine boughs in the air, all the wafting odors of food and beverages drifting across the Platz. And yes, a couple of glasses of Glühwein!

Even though it was a rather mercantile setting, I still enjoyed it very much!

Hello Gents:
It sounds excellent!! We mull cider here in the States, and it is very good; I just had some a few days ago. I am sure warm mulled wine has quite an affect on partygoers; 8) sounds like fun. Hello Der Alte: I noticed there were many German folks in the Pacific Northwest when I lived in Seattle; not of German heritage, but recent immigrants. Nothing new for me because German heritage is big here in Ohio, but interesting none the less. I suppose rainy mountains and tall trees kind of feel like home to people of German extraction. Christoph: I would love to visit Salzburg during the Christmas season; I envy you!!! Prosper: many thanks for the recipe; I have a party coming up, so it might be fun to brew a little up!! Thanks for all of your help and best wishes to all.
