Crushing defeat before Lemberg - Jun 1941.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; a new topic.................

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

Assembling the forces.

On the German side, the 71. ID was transferred to the General Government of Poland in late March and by mid-June 1941 it took its stretch of attack between Futory and Cieszanow. On the night of 21 to 22 June, the regiments occupied the readiness area on the Soviet border. As of May 23, 1941 the regiments of the 97. Le. ID began their transport to Slovakia, being billeted around Presow. The march continued by Gorlice - Jaslo - Rzeszow and Zalmia up to around Lezaisk where the Unit held its assembly area for the invasion of the Soviet Union. After te end of the campaign in the Balkans, the 1. GD moved by rail through Slovakia to the border with Poland. Until June 20, 1941, the regiments moved to the assembly area at the demarcation line with the Soviet Union in the area of Dzików in Eastern Galicia.

While on the Soviet side by June 20, 1941 the commander of the 6th Soviet Army, Lieutenant General Muzichenko alert and ordered the 8th Tank Division and the 81st Motorized Division to leave their assembly areas near Lwow in order to occupy their positions in the coverage area. The concentration was carried out in secret and it was known that the 81st Motorized Division left the summer camp near Janowski forest on the night of June 21, 1941. According to the plan the 4th Mechanized Corps should concentrate its forces in Janow (81st Motorized Division), Dubrovytsa (8th tank Division) and Mokrotin (32nd tank Division) also should detach to the 6th Army the 32nd Motorized Rifle Regiment with a battalion of medium tanks as reserve to area of Nemiroff.

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 23, 1941.

The German attack proceeds to the depth and the GJR 98 reached the route Jazow Stary - Niemirow. In the 71. ID the IR 194 came before Budomierz and conquered the place. After sighting strong Russian armored units in Jaworow, the regiment formed south of Hruszow a defensive front facing south with two battalions. The Pz. Jäg. Abt. 171 was attached to the regiment. The IR 191, reinforced by the III. / AR 171, advanced from Burowa Gora through the forest to the southeast and arrived in the afternoon with the III. Battalion to Niemirow route - Rysy east of Szawary; with the II. Battalion to the left and rear, reached the forest northwest of Szawary and held the line. The IR 211 continued as a reserve of the division and went behind the IR 191 to Szawary.

The commander of the 4th Mechanized Corps decided to deliver "a jab, " and ordered the commander of the 32nd Tank Division that third battalions of the tank regiments were subordinate to the commander of the 32nd Rifle Motorized Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Lysenko with the task of advancing southwesterly to Radekhiv and crush the enemy which broke into that direction. These units left first at dawn, after that marched the bulk of the division. At 10:00 hours the commander of the division (32nd Div Tanks), Colonel Pushkin received a new task - to destroy the enemy in Mosty Vielkie. A part of the forces of the division had to take a new direction. To interact with the 3rd Cavalry Division, which operated in this area was designated a reinforced tank battalion of the 64th Tank Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Golyasa.

By 17:00 hours the Golyasa group reached the area of operations and, together with the cavalry proceeded to fulfill its combat mission.

In the afternoon Colonel Pushkin received a new order of the Commander of the 6th Army to destroy hostile infantry and tanks that had broken near Kamenka. The division began to fulfill the task, however, found no enemy in the area. Therefore, during the day, the main forces of the 32nd Tank Division not only had to fight, but also perform marches, the total length of which amounted to more than 100 kilometers.

June 24, 1941.

Nemiroff. Prelude.

On this day the 97 Le. ID was engaged on the front and had the first battles, the IR 204 in the heights of Radruz and the IR 207 in the wooded area near Smolin. Elements of IR 194 were involved in the anti-tank fight in and around Niemirow. While the bulk of IR 191 arrived in the morning up to the road Niemirow - Radruz and surpassed it. Around noon, the regiment took up height 365, northeast of Wroblacyn and at sunset went on the road just north of Wroblacyn in order to establish the defense for the night. On the night of 23 to 24 June, the II. / IR 211 was attached again to the IR 194. But by the morning of June 24, it returned to the regiment after removing weak resistance in Niemirow Zdroj on the eastern edge of the forest west of Niemirow. Then the IR 211 marched on Niemirow itself. Shortly after 11:00 hours the advanced elements of the regiment (IR 211) reached the edge of the town. The 1. / IR 211 and the 1. / IR 194 (both cyclists companies) had conquered and cleared the scene by 10:20 hours. Vanguards of the Pz. Jäg. abt. 171 and A.A. 171 marched towards Szczerzec. The 3. / Pi. Btl 171 was tasked in order to block the routes from Niemirow to south and east.

At dawn the 32nd Tank Div was assembled in the area of Dzibulki, Batyatyche in order to carry out reconnaissance to Kamenka Strumilova. Parts of the 81st Mot Div occupied an assembly area in the wooded land between Dobrosin, Zazhische, Sawada and around 06:30 hours these forces advanced towards Kreshew, Magierow, Niemirow. At 11:00 hours the 4th Mechanized Corps commanded the 32nd Tank Div, which together with the 8th Tank Div and the 81st Mot Div, starting from Jazow Stary, Height 236 was to attack and destroy the enemy in the area Olszyna, Hotynets, Mlyn. The 32nd Mot Reg. should march to Lwow on orders of the Mechanized Corps.

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 24, 1941.

Nemiroff. Fight in the morning against th 8th Tank Div.

Around 11:20 hours the vanguard sent a warning report about a Russian armored attack. Meanwhile the advanced parts of the III. / IR 211 crossed Niemirow heading north. At that time, the Russian armored attack struck the regiment. This time were into the town the 1. (Radfahr) / IR 194 with two Platoons in the square and one in the north exit; the 1. (Radfahr) / IR 211 with its 1. Pl in the eastern exit, 2. Pl north exit and the 3. Pl in the square; 4 light and 2 medium anti-tank guns of the 14. / IR 211 in the north aiming to the east and northeast and the Pi. Zug IR 211 near the square.

Around 11:40 hours a Russian heavy tank (T-28 or T-34?) was approaching by the road to Szczerzec, about 1000 meters followed other 20 heavy tanks (T-34?). The tanks entered Niemirow and opened fire on the first houses and antitank positions, the buildings burned and the unit suffered the first casualties. The first tank advanced due north from the square and was put out of action by an antitank gun at close range, but the gun was hit also; this tank blocked the road to the north. The rest of the tanks moved from the square towards the south and on their way destroyed a Platoon of heavy howitzers of the 13. / IR 211, which lost two howitzers, two limbers, two cars and 32 horses.

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 24, 1941.

Nemiroff. Fight in the morning against the 8th Tank Div.

Following its tour, then the tanks came across a Platoon of the 1. / Pz. Jäg. Abt. 171 coming from the south. Some armored yet managed to reach the southern exit of Niemirow but came under fire from the guns of the 2. / Pz. Jäg. Abt. 171. Still the sappers of the IR 211 destroyed some tanks with explosive charges.

First question and request for a help: in effect the reports of the commander of the 8th Tank Div. for this day shows that, while en route to Jazow Stary, the 15th Tank Reg engaged in combat with hostile elements in the area of Nemiroff, destroying up to an infantry battalion and 12 antitank guns, but losing 19 T-34 in action. He does not mention any T-28, which otherwise would be of the 16th Tank Reg (which is not mentioned in the fights) .... Nor do I find any reference about the KV-1 which had the first battalions of both armored regiments. Any ideas?

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 24, 1941.

Nemiroff. Fight in the afternoon against the 81th Div. Mot.

Soon after followed a second armored attack with about 12 tanks advanced on the north exit of Niemirow. These vehicles were repelled with the fire of all weapons from the northern edge of the village and were burned in the corn and the crews fled into the woods. After a break of one hour another 10 tanks attacked from the forest located at 1 km northeast of Niemirow, behind followed at least one infantry Platoon without heavy weapons; This attack followed the same fate as the previous ones.

At about 13:15 hours Niemirow was burning on all four sides and 35 Soviet tanks had been destroyed in and around the town. At 13:30 hours the commander of the III. / IR 211 took up the defense of Niemirow with infantry and the Commander of Pz. Jäg. Abt. 171 took over the antitank defense. At 16:00 hours there was a new attack with 30 tanks armed with heavy guns but were halted by the fire of the I., II. and IV. / AR 171 and then destroyed by anti-tank fire, explosives and hand grenades. After this latest attack was unleashed on Niemirow a massive fire of hostile artillery. Around 17:00 hours the commander of the IR 194, Maj. Lanz took over as commander of the plaza.

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 24, 1941.

Nemiroff. The aftermath.

From the report of the 81st Mot. Div. arises that in the afternoon between 15:00 and 17:00 hours the Division attacked Nemiroff with two battalions of the 53rd Tank Reg and the 8. Infantry Company of the 323º Mot. Reg., lost in the following actions 36 tanks BT-7 and 65% of the infantry personnel. Adding that as a result of the attack the fascist enemy withdrew to the west and the streets of the town were strewn with corpses. However due to the lack of infantry were unable to maintain the positions and the tanks withdrew from Nemiroff. From 20:00 hours onwards the remnants of the 81st Mot. Div marched to the district of Jazow Nowy - Schklo.

But where was the 32nd Tank Div? The mentioned division moved east across Lwow in front of the columns of the 8th Mechanized Corps that blocked the routes. Countless clashes with Ukrainian nationalists who attacked troops from rooftops and attics occurred. A portion of the civilian population and the rear services of the 6th Army panicked. Only by evening the 32nd Tank Div. could finally leave the city, however in order to maintain the order in the city remained there, the 32nd Motorized Rifle Reg. (32nd Tank Div.), the 202nd Motorized Rifle Reg. (81st Mot Div.), units of the 8th Mechanized Corps and the NKVD.

At the end of the day the armored regiments of the 32nd Tank Div. took up defensive positions on the western edge of the forest of Janowski.

Hello to all ; more follows.................

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 25, 1941.

Jazow Stary. Prelude.

On June 25, 1941 both regiments of the 97. Le. ID continued its progress and seized the heights of Jaworniki, this objective was retained until dusk.

While the 71. ID proceeded its march and between June 25/27, 1941 fought in the area of Wiszenka.

On the other hand in evening of June 24, 1941 the 1. GD had conquered the heights overlooking the road Jaworow - Nemiroff and deployed on a front of 27 km between Bozawola and Norajec. The previous night had been a quiet one, but at first light, the Soviets sent down extremely accurate heavy artillery fire which lasted most of the day. Coupled with this intense fire, repeated armoured attacks were launched, in both the 98th and 99th Regiments fronts.

On the Soviet side, with great difficulty and after overcoming congestion of routes, the machines of the 32nd Tank Division concentrated around 02:00 hours in the forest Janowski, Grabnik. Around 10:00 hours it received orders from the 4th Mechanized Corps by which the division shall carried out an attack in support of the 6th Army, but the Army Command assigned to the division a freelance attack toward a heavily fortified area, with swamps and waterways without the support of artillery or infantry.

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 25, 1941.

Jazow Stary. 1. GD.

The German Mountain Army Corps ordered to resume the advance on June 25 in order to reach the line stretched between Czernilawa and Koty. But before they can start moving, the Soviets launched three armored attacks close noon, at 14:00 and 17:00 hours. Along the entire front of the division, broke fierce combat against hostile tanks. The GJR 99 repelled an attack by about 20 tanks from Zaluze during the morning and in the afternoon another 40 tanks from Czernilawa and Romaniki.

While at 11:40 hours, was launched an armored attack from Koty against the I. and II. / GJR 98. The artillery and antitank fire forced the enemy to disperse over a large area. Concentrated artillery fire in some cases, forced the tanks to move to areas where they eventually bogged down. This massive attack was finally repulsed after heavy fighting which lasted over an hour.

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 25, 1941.

Jazow Stary. 1. GD.

Located near Jazow Stary, the 3rd Battalion of the 98th Regiment received the brunt of an attack by about 50 tanks of the Soviet 32nd Tank Div. Once the initial assault was launched, Soviet tanks lost the early advantage given by the surprise and came under fire from German artillery, the concentrated fire of antitank weapons and close combat tactics. The German soldiers did their best to let the tanks and their crews inoperative (shooting pistols, rifles and automatic weapons in the peepholes and open domes, dropping grenades on the tanks guns and open hatches, placing explosive charges on the tracks, firing signals pistols in the ventilation systems, placing explosive charges against the turret rings, etc). Once this was achieved, the tanks were destroyed. Twenty-eight Soviet tanks were destroyed in front of the III. Battalion alone, and nearly all of them through close combat tactics.

According to reports from the 32nd Tank Div, around 14:00 hours the division took its starting positions and then went on the offensive in the direction of Jazow Stary without cooperation with infantry nor artillery support, since there was no tractors. As a result of the fight with the German troops (an experienced Mountain Division and the 68. ID), the 64th Tank Reg. bogged down in the lowlands (the 1st Battalion was not involved in the battle), and the 63rd Tank Reg. suffered losses and retreated. It turned out that the German Pak guns of 3.7 cm and 5 cm were useless against armor of the T-34 and KV-1 and our losses were caused by the action of grenades and anti-tank mines of German sappers that operated freely in the absence of our infantry. In this battle, the German losses were 16 self-propelled guns, weapons, ammunition, trailers; our losses of 15 tanks. The casualties of the German 68. ID were so great that it was replaced by the 4. GD.

Hello to all ; more follows.................

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 25, 1941.

Jaworow.

On this day also clashes between the Soviets 97th Rifle Div. and the 81st Mot. Div and the Germans 68. ID an 257. ID had taken place. Going back a bit, by the evening of June 24, 1941, the Soviet 6th Army defenses yielded, there was no longer a continuous front and the gap between the 159th Rifle Div and the 97th Rifle Div. reached about 40 kilometers. To restore the situation General Muzichenko threw into the battle the 4th Mechanized Corps of General Vlasov (on June 25, 1941). However this action was overturned in the area of m. Krakovets by the German resistance and the precipitate withdrawal of the 97th Rifle Div. around 16:00 hours. Before that and trying to stabilize the situation the 81st Mot. Div attacked along the road to Jaworow. But counterattacks were unsuccessful and by 17:30 hours the 97th Rifle Div. and the 81st Mot. Div had lost its artillery due to Germans counter-battery fires adjusted by the aviation. Parts of both Soviet divisions began to retreat eastward, abandoning its heavy weapons.

The situation was exacerbated by the fact that equipment and heavy weapons that lined up on the road hindered the passage and the surrounding swamps does not allow to bypass around vehicles and tractors in flames under enemy fire. In the afternoon the 323rd Motorized Rifle Regiment, part of the 125th Artillery Regiment and the Task Force of the 81st Mot. Div were surrounded. The 32nd Tank Div retreated to Gródek Jagielloński and Sądowa Wisznia. By nightfall the encircled troops of the 97th Rifle and 81st Mot Divisions still offered resistance around Jaworow.

June 25, 1941.

Magierow.

But meanwhile that very June 25, 1941, but further due north, both regiments of the 97. Le. ID continued its advance and seized the heights of Jaworniki, goal that was withheld until dusk. After dark, almost immediately followed the Soviet counterattack, even supported by heavy tanks, which lasted until the next morning, June 26, 1941 and could be rejected with the support of the AR 81.

Indeed, here was engaged the Soviet 8th Tank Division, which fulfilling orders received from the upper echelon was marching toward Zolkiew; according to reports from the Soviet unit, during the night of 25 to 26 June 1941, the 15th Tank Reg. (with an effective strength of 54 tanks) attacked Magierow, destroying a battery of 75mm?? guns and capturing documentation and personnel of AR 81, but at the cost of another 19 tanks.

Hello to all :D; more follows.................

Infantry vs tanks at the border. Niemirow, Magierow and Jazow Stary 24/26 June 1941.

June 26, 1941.

Aftermath of the fighting.

The troops of the 1. GD remained on high alert during the night of 25/26 June, from Stary Jazow could be heard armored movements, a new attack was expected at any time. However, the next morning, only a feeble attempt materialized in the area of the GJR 99, in the direction of Romaniki. Some of the Soviet tanks which achieved their assembly area were destroyed by shells of 150 mm of the IV. / GAR 79. It seemed that the enemy had retreated eastward, obviously surprised by multiple losses of the previous night.

With less opposition on the right flank, during the morning the GJR 99 got a foothold near Zaluze, making contact with the GJR 98 which had occupied Jazow Stary. Both regiments sent strong recce elements west of the forest, located east of their area. On several occasions, these elements encountered enemy tanks.

During the day, clearing the battlefields led to a series of small skirmishes against Soviet soldiers who had been lying in the surrounding ground. This, indeed, was the reason for the III. / GAR 79 was suddenly attacked by three tanks and infantry support.
