Hello to all ; more follows..............
The assault against the position of the Albert Canal - May of 1940.
3. Fall Gelb - May 1940.
3.2. The advance of the The IR 151 and the Pi Btl 51.
May 11 of 1940.
The 14. / IR 151 (Hauptmann Hauboldt) succeeded in crossing the Albert Canal with its antitank guns and headed towards the village of Eben Emael; by 10:00 hours it had begun the firefight with the works of the fort. As the III. / AR 161 was ready to receive fire missions, Oberstleutnant Melzer decided to launch a coordinated assault against the fortress. The 4 Pz would support the assault reaching the line 120 - Heukelom at 12:00 hours. At 12:00 hours the regimental Engineers Platoon (Pi Zug IR 151) with its horse-drawn vehicles crossed the bridge of Maastricht in the midst of an armored division in advance (3 Pz).
At 12: 30 hours the battalions I. and III. / IR 151 crossed the Channel while the II. / IR 151 without resistance seized the town of Eben Emael. In the northern corner of the fort developed an intense fight, but when the anti-tank guns of Hauptmann Hauboldt reduced works 17 and 35 approached the 1. / Pi 51. The assault was supported by an air strike by the Stukas. At 11:30 hours the 6. / IR 151 launched their assault and at 13:00 hours won the ground’s dominant feature in that area. At 12:00 hours the antitank reduced works 3, 6 and 4, allowing to reach the plateau of the fortress and to capture the works 26 and 31.
