The assault against the position of the Albert Canal - May of 1940.

3. Fall Gelb - May 1940.

3.2. The advance of the 4 Pz... ... ... ...

May 10 of 1940.

Both bridgeheads established at Vroenhoven and at Veldwezelt were under fire from the Belgian artillery. The AR 103 provided fire support to the airborne troops and companies of riflemen who fought within them throughout the day.

In the north, an attack against the Carabiniers, from Veldwezelt had not been successful. To the south, the attacker had entered the roads which surround the sunken Kesselt. The 1. / SR 12 attacked to Laafelt but because of the darkness and the enemy resistance the attack was canceled and the company withdrew towards the crossroads Tongern-Laafelt. The Belgian battalion (III./18 RI) revised its measures to defend itself against the 360 º. The wing companies are asking for ammunition, the company in the center sent ammo by its own (The 9. Company defended the south and east of Kesselt, 10. Company north comprising Hees and the 11. Company at the center).

The I./ IR 489 at Eysden – Ter Naaien (Lanaye in Belgian).
you should read Lanaye in French language.........

The assault against the position of the Albert Canal - May of 1940.

3. Fall Gelb - May 1940.

3.2. The advance of the 4 Pz... ... ... ...

May 10 of 1940.

Darkness brought no respite; constantly the Belgian battalion (III/ 18) had thwart small raids, sometimes losing ground due to lack of ammunition. Between 22:00 to 23:00 hours the Belgian batteries of artillery shelled vigorously the bridge of Weldwezelt. The enemy replied with their guns at the mound of Hees and maintained an intense firefight. In a few points it was reached the fight with hand grenades and close combat. An officer was sent to Hees and he did not find the 2nd Battalion anymore. No new about the regiment.

At midnight, Maj. Blondel stated that the units will remain in place and distributed the last stock of ammunition. Meanwhile, the Command of the SR 12 reached Wilre and established the CP near the church, both bridgeheads had, generally speaking, the following dimensions: 600 meters deep and 1 to 1.5 kilometers wide.

3. Fall Gelb - May 1940.

3.2. The advance of the 269 ID... ... ... ...

May 10 of 1940.

The actions against the tunnels of Gemmenich and southwestern of Homburg were fulfilled successfully, however the tunnel of Teuwen was blown up. The Pi Btl 51 was advancing toward the fort of Eben Emael. The 1. and 2. Sanitary Companies were in Euveren; the 2. Company should recognize a Main Aid Station at Banholt for the next day.

The Belgian troops in the area belonged to the III. Battalion of 2nd Grenadier Regiment of the 7 DI. This regiment occupied a front of about 9 kilometers, but any enemy advancing between Lanaye and Lixhe and must overcome the river Meuse, the Albert Canal and the cliffs of Loen with vertical walls of nearly one hundred meters high and over the cliff the modern Fortress of Eben Emael. In the sector of the bridge of Kanne defended the II. Battalion and behind as reserve the I. Battalion. Towards Vroenhoven was deployed the 18 Line Regiment (7 DI) and to Lixhe, the 2nd Border Cyclist Regiment.

Hello Raúl,

Great topic, and i've read it with great interest because i live in this area very close to all places that are named here.

I am new to this forum and i'm a military modeller that specialises in ww2 german figures. Very big interest in German ww2 history as well and especially foreign Waffen SS Volunteers.

I am starting up a new set of figures in 1/35 with german soldiers wearing the early m36 uniform and searching for info to make a small vignette with a scene in which they wear this uniform.

So all info and pictures are very welcome :D

Cheers, Albert

Oberstleutnant Mikosch crossed among the first in difficult conditions, taking into account the steep slopes. The boats crossed one after another without being diverted by hostile fire and the link with the troops of Koch was established at last. Yet, during the night, the I. / IR 151 arrived at the Canal and during the morning reached the area of Cannes the III./ IR 151.

He then ordered the unit was "to keep the positions, releasing two red signals, indicating that you still resist."

At 05:30 hours the war’s bridge over the river Meuse was completed and the armored with the first artillery batteries went across the river and took position on the western shore.

The assault against the position of the Albert Canal - May of 1940.

3. Fall Gelb - May 1940.

3.2. The advance of the 269 ID................

May 11 of 1940.

The Albert Canal.

The border between Belgium and the Netherlands, runs through the middle of the Meuse, the village of Ter Naaien (Lanaye) is Belgian. The Belgian fortifications were behind the canal and among them stood out the Fort of Eben Emael.

It was dawning on May 11, 1940 and still was fog over the Channel, the 1. Platoon, 3. / Pi Btl 269, was alarmed and went to the banks of the watercourse. Leutnant Franz led the reconnaissance. In the dense fog the German soldiers approached the channel; the heavy machine guns were emplaced. There was no sign of life of the enemy yet and our Stukas were ready.

The artillery unleashed their concentrations with all available tubes but did not seem to have any effect. At 05:20 hours the fog lifted and engineers moved the boats a little forwards. Taking advantage of the fire support from heavy weapons the infantry and engineers jumped out of its covers and the boats were thrown into the water: row!, row! On reaching the middle of the channel all hell broke loose on the defenseless raiders, only two boats reached the second bank with their crews dead or wounded. The assault had been broken and the defenders held their positions. The soldiers of the sanitary units recovered the dead and helped the wounded, the division had suffered heavy casualties.

South of Canne a secondary channel is separated from the main and together with dome which was located some 20 meters constituted the advanced protection of the works of the fortification. Furthermore, the gates were opened hence flooding roads and grounds.

In this situation a bold idea germinated in the mind of Oberfeldwebel Portsteffen. He together with 50 selected men brought dinghies already damaged by gunfire and he could get across the flooded land in defiance of the fire that kept the Belgians aided by searchlights and flares. Through a field fraught with dangers both engineering groups established liaison at last on May 11, 1940 at 07:00 hours.

May 11 of 1940.

At 06:00 hours arrived the order to attack towards Tongern; from that moment the 4 Pz was subordinated to the XVI AK (Mot). At 07:15 hours the SR 12 attacked with its I. Battalion on the right and its II. Battalion (less the 6. Coy) to the left; the 6. / SR 12 (on bicycle) followed along the road as a reserve of the regiment. To the right of the SR 12 and jumping from Veldwezelt would go to the attack the SR 33. The left flank was open. Sounds of motors were heard approaching the bridgeheads, from the enemy side were coming Belgian, French and British bombers to destroy the bridges.

Hello to all :D; more follows..............

The assault against the position of the Albert Canal - May of 1940.

3. Fall Gelb - May 1940.

3.2. The advance of the 269 ID................

May 11 of 1940.

The Albert Canal.

At 08:30 hours taking advantage of the fog two battalions of the IR 490 crossed the river Meuse. At 10:30 hours there was another attempt which also failed, the Germans had a critical situation and besides, on the western shore lay at least 20 German soldiers killed or wounded. The artillery concentrated their fire on the height 119. In the CP of the Division, General v. Richthofen reported that he had no other dive bombers at hand and said also that around 13:00 hours could have a squadron of ground attack (schlachtflieger).

By intense fire from anti-tank guns there were put out of action several forts, one showed a white flag and from others fled its crews; then came the aerial attack and broke the enemy's resistance. At 13:30 hours, the division received an important news, the height 119 on the other side of the canal had been conquered. A further notable success, the Pi Btl 51 had cleared the way for Eben Emael. But it could not be counted however with a quick crossing because the division had lost its crossing material.

At 21:00 hours Major Schiche discovered three enemies observers with a radio in the tower of the church of Ter Naaien (Lanaye).

Hello to all :D; more follows..............

The assault against the position of the Albert Canal - May of 1940.

3. Fall Gelb - May 1940.

3.2. The advance of the The IR 151 and the Pi Btl 51.

May 11 of 1940.

At dawn on May 11, 1940, the situation was desperate for the Belgian soldiers of the Gr 2; without reinforcements, Colonel Herbiet, a true soldier repeated the order: "Stay in place." In the Second Battalion, the struggle continues bitterly in Canne, the battalion was retreated along the valley, establishing a new defensive line which frustrated any attack. In front of the Third Battalion, in the Albert Canal, the German infantry was concentrated (269 ID) trying in vain to overcome this obstacle.

It was however in the First Battalion, deployed in the second line, where the events represented a serious threat. In the morning, at 06:00 hours, it was attacked from left, front and flank, alternating artillery, aircraft and tanks. At 09:30 hours, Heukelom was surrounded. The attacker advancing from north to south towards Sussen mounted a big attack by the West, while other forces advancing from the plateau to Opcanne and push the remnants of the Second Battalion, which was forced to face its rear. At 13:00 hours, the heroic Commander, Levaque, was killed pistol in hand, in the midst of their last soldiers.

3. Fall Gelb - May 1940.

3.2. The advance of the 4 Pz.

May 11 of 1940.

Shortly afterwards approached the Stukas and sounding their sirens swoops on enemy troops. The attack from both bridgeheads gained ground quickly and the I / SR 12 taking advantage of the air support broke into the Belgian defenses; its 2. Company (right) won Vlijtingen and its 1. Company (Mechanized) took Laafelt and captured some 200 prisoners. Between Membruggen and Herderen they overwhelmed the batteries which were firing over the bridgeheads. In the action area of the II. Battalion the resistance was higher and the unit suffered casualties mostly with shots in the head and bellies, a Belgian aircraft destroyed a light howitzer of 7.5 mm of the 8. / SR 12. At 09:30 hours the I / SR 12 reached the first objective Membruggen, Herderen; the II. / SR 12 secured the open flank towards Heukelon and Bolre. The Regimental CP was in Riempst. Shortly before 09:30 hours a patrol of the regiment led by an officer, reported that Tongern was free of enemy.

Hence were organized two detachments, one under the command of Major Buddé with the Pz Jäg Abt 269 reinforced with a company of riflemen, plus artillery and one rifle battalion, the second in command of Major Drange with the three anti-tank companies belonging to the infantry regiments reinforced with an infantry platoon.

At 04:00 hours the detachments were in the southeast exit of Maastricht and 04:30 hours the bridge was released for the division and the vehicles of the Pz Jäg Abt followed by a company of riflemen marched towards Wonk.

At 07:30 hours the command of the division set its first CP on the western bank of the canal in Wonk, it was guarded by a tank and a riflemen platoon, freeing the Pz Jäg Abt which was sent to Glons.
