Tigers looked square in the body, and had large interleaved wheels. Panthers had the same type of wheel setup, but had the sloped front plate. Pz IV's had eight small wheels with 4 return rollers and the Pz III had six small road wheels with 3 return upper rollers. Find pics on the net and print them out, stare at them every day until you eat, breath, and drink Panzers!!!!!!!!

Just to add, those three all had turrets, but there were many variations using all those chassis's. From assault guns to Jagd panzers..............

If you absolutely need to know the vers. differences, I suggest books on each tank. I only have the "Squadron IN ACTION" books and they show the differences........................

Panzer Ausf.

Post by Paul Hanson »

Simple clues to the Panthers:

Panther Ausf D dust bin commander's cupola and letterbox MG slot on glacis plate.

Panther Ausf A Early A has cast commanders cupola but still has the letterbox MG slot. Late A has cast ball mount hull MG plus the cast commanders cupola.

Panther Ausf G redesigned hull - the hull sides are straight, eliminating the bent down plate at the rear of the Ausf D/A hulls.

Tiger and Panzer IV variants

Post by Paul Hanson »

Second bunch of info

The Tiger I and II have only one Ausfuehrung, E and B respectively. Old info(from the Brits)said the Tiger I were labeled Ausf H and Ausf E. The Ausf H was applied to the early prototype and meant Henschel to deferentiate prototypes from the Porche or Ausf P. So all you have to worry about with Tigers is:

Early production Tiger I - Dust bin cupola and rubber tired roadwheels
Mid-production Tiger I - Cast cupola and rubber tired roadwheels
Later production Tiger I - Cast cupola and steel wheels.

First Tiger II's used up the 50 turrets manufactured for the Porche Tiger, which has the curved front plate and then all remaining Tiger II's were fitted with the Serienturm which has the vertical front plate.

The Panzer IV is a little more complicated. Since many changes appeared throughout it's production life. I would recommend a simple book such as Squadron's Pzkpfw IV in Action.

Oh, http://achtungpanzer.com/profiles.htm; a great source of old and outdated information. I'd skip it.

Outdated article

Post by Paul Hanson »

George;

Note I said specifically:... /profiles.htm

The most glaring is the description of Panther Ausfeuhrungs. This stuff about Ausf. D1 and D2 has been debunked by Thomas Jentz in his book.

Second is the Tiger Ausf H1 and Ausf E. You state the Ausf H1 has the Feifel aircleaners and the Ausf E were Tigers without the Feifels. Yet the Pzkpfw VI Ausf H1 was renamed Pzkpfw. Tiger Ausf. E in March, 1943. Yet the Feifel aircleaners were not dropped until October, 1943. Again Tom Jentz in D.W to Tiger I

Also Panzer IV Ausf. F2 and Ausf. G are really the same vehicle, also from Tom Jentz.

While this last comment may be new info the others have been around long enough. You've corrected the outdated version of Wittmann's death so you are doing corrections. Why not these?

I still do not think that if someone is unfamiliar with the various Panzers they will really learn to distinguish the different Ausfeuhrungs from this section. It's very broadbrush and does not have that many "profiles" to help out.

The website is being constantly updated and revised but it is impossible to
keep all pages updated. As to the info you provided, I am updating the pages slowly and soon new info will be up, although I don't have to share all that Jentz states as he is not the only source that exists. As to sections being broadbrush, unfortunately the website is not my fulltime job and I can't spend 8hr a day writing articles and updating the website. I try my best to update all sections.

Thank you for feedback.

Site updating

Post by Paul Hanson »

George;

I understand. Working for a living keeps interferring with the important things in life.

I wish to apologize for so blithely blowing off your site. Your comment about keeping the website up-to-date not being your full time job is a honest statement to which we all can relate.

Next time I will be more exact about what concerns I have with at a website.
