Panzer IIIs in Belgium, Sept 44

Post by Seret »

I'm doing some research for a wargames campaign I'm writing, set around Polish 1st Armoured Division's pursuit of German 245.ID through NW France and Belgium in the first week of Sept 44.

The Polish records show them bumping into a column containing Panzer IVs and Panzer IIIs around the France/Belgium border. Does anybody know what unit these would have been from, and what the PzIIIs might have been? Could they have been observers or flammpanzers, late model gun tanks, or the Ausf N perhaps?

I've tried to dig it out for myself, but 15th Army had no panzer divisions, so I'm guessing this is a smaller unit that was attached, or possibly a fragment of another unit that was in the area. Either way, I've not been able to identify it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Would be unusual to encounter Pz Ausf III in September '44. Perhaps they were Stug III?
