Grave Photo Request

Post by postofficeworker »

Is anyone near, or going near the German cemetery at Recogne, Bastogne :?: If so, could someone take a photo of the following grave....

Albert SILBERHORN
Rottenfuhrer
b 12.02.21
d 05.01.45

Block 2 / Row 11 / Grave 440

Could I have one of the cemetery too?

Thanks

Hello Simon.. From my attachments, you'll notice to the sender is an Albert Silberhorn. This might be the same soldier who is buried in Recogne, Bastogne

Thanks for responding :)

Hi,
It's possible it may be one and the same person. The only other point of reference the Feldpostnummer, was used by Das Reich from late 1944 and of course was involved in Wacht Am Rhein in the Southern shoulder.

It was used by different unit in 1941, so it can't be wholly relied upon as proof of identity.

I will see if I sort it for you, no promises.

btw You may not have realised that this month marks the 50th Anniversary of the Soldatenfriedhof, Recogne being inaugurated.
Having initially been a place to gather the fallen of both sides after the Battle of the Bulge the US fallen were later moved to Henri-Chappelle. Today the cemetery at Recogne is still a beautifully peaceful refuge, and a sombre reminder of those who fell for their country in WW2, not only during the Battle of the Bulge but also those killed in the fighting in the area in 1940.

Hello Tony,

The Battle of the Ardennes has been an interest for many years. This part of the world has everything, history, great food, great beer, lovely people and beautiful scenery. The beauty of the Ardennes today belies the horrors of 65 years ago.

Drop me your email address via my site and I'll let you know how it goes.

Kind Regards,
Simon.

Simon... very happy to receive those images. They are a great help to me. (Did you note the age of the other man in that plot?)
Thanks for your efforts

Hello Tony,
The ages of the fallen differ widely it's true. Walk among the rows of headstones and you can imagine you see the faces of older, wiser men, whose families wait at home for word of their fate, as well as young headstrong, eager types - perhaps as Albert once was.

Yet here they all lie, in a well kept cemetary, all divisions of class, race are levelled out. The unknown soldiers lie with named comrades in arms. So even at the last, the unknown can rest among their own, and not alone.

Tony, you are now the present guardian of those pieces of Feldpost history. Keep them and the information you have on the men in a safe place. One day it will be someone elses pleasure to treasure them...

Best,
Simon.
