U-505 Hey, its not like i wanted to pull the trigger

Post by Erwin Rosen »

U-505 was the only boat where the Captain commited suicide (shot himself). During a severe depth charge barrage he was afraid of drowning to death, hence he ended it swiftly with a p38 bullet to the head. The sub is on display in chicago and if you live out there definetly worth a check out!

When I was 15 years old or so, I had the pleasure of touring the U-505 at the Museum of Science and Industry. When we were in the conning tower, I asked the tour guide if this was the place where the captain had shot himself. He hissed at me, "We don't discuss that!"
Cheers,

Patrick

When I was single, I had three theories on raising children. Now I have three children and no theories.

The guides at the Museum of Science and Industry, where U505 is, are not the brightest lights on the tree. I took the tour in 78 and one guide told me that the US had DIESEL powered torpedoes. I laughed out loud, drawing attention to myself and the silver Dolphins on my chest. Yes, I was in uniform and yes, I rode submarines.
