The Berlin, renamed "Admiral Nakhimov" after being requisitioned by the USSR, collided with a freighter in 1986 with great loss of life (it sank in 7 min) on its final voyage (it was scheduled to be scrapped after the last voyage).
I'm thinking about setting up an English version of the Russian site dedicated to the disaster. There are lots of fearsome images and text, but next to no info about its use before and during WWII and, espeacially, the double sinking in 1945. I also wonder if she ever crossed the Atlantic.
Any images from that time should be greatly appreciated!
It's such a shame this catastrophy is eclipsed.
A Chicago trubine article outlines the event, though with much imperfection: http://www.wrecks.net/news/trib8602.htm

Hello
the Berlin was launched in 1925 ( 15.286 BRT) and part of the Norddeutscher Lloyd
During the war the ship didn`t move and was used as a hospital ship
(static) in Swinemunde.
on 31 januari 1945 in Swinemunde the ship tried to join a convoy with refugees, but
touched a mine. Luckily there was only the crew on board and there
was only one dead. Later some tugboats tried to get the Berlin
into shallow water but in the course of that operation she touched
another mine and sank.
That`s all I can find about the ship but it seems not to difficult to
get information via the Norddeutscher Lloyd.
