U455 a question

Post by Andrea »

Hello All,

last raining sunday while putting in order some data from my archive, I found an old post from Peter K.

http://www.feldgrau.net/phpBB2/viewtopi ... light=u455

in this post Peter write a very interesting note:

05.04.1944
UJ2221, UJ2222, SG15, R189 and R215 left La Spezia to escort U455 home. AA-fire at Qu. CJ1359
Then, as it's already known, an italian diver claimed to have found an Uboot in Portofino Area, probably U455.

From other data I saw that U455 was reported as missing from 06.04.1944

http://www.uboat.net/boats/u455.htm
Previously recorded fate (Last revised by during April 2005)
Sunk 6 April, 1944 near La Spezia, in position 44.04N, 09.51E, by a mine, possibly German.
Listed as missing in the Mediterranean after 6 April, 1944, probably in or around the Ligurian Sea.
No explanation exists for its loss. 51 dead (all hands lost).
So what is strange for me is why U455 is listed missing 06 april 44 if R189, R215 and UJ2221/2222 were escorting him home?

I think that something is wrong, could someone explain me what and if it's not where I'm wrong?

Thanks all

Andrea

Both statements are actually correct. The U-Boat and escorts left La Spezia on 05.04.44 and U-455 was reported lost on 06.04.44.

K Wynn in his 'U-Boat Operations Volume 1' speculates that one of her own mines detonated.

Another great site that caters to the UBoat enthusiast that might be able to answer your question:

Only he is lost who gives himself up as lost.
