shpbuilding question

Post by Peter K. »

Hi everybody!

I have a nice sketch of the midship section of the cruiser EMDEN (III), printed in Evers, Kriegsschiffbau.
(beam 14,2 m, draught 5,3 m)

Now I had made an effort to recalculate the area of this midship section and her coeffizient with the help of the Simpson method.

Hadeler, Kriegsschiffbau, already gives this coeffizient with 0,72, which would mean an area of about 54,2 m².

Unfortunately my calculations quoted for a coeffizient of about 0,89, resp. an area of about 66,6 m². These figures would bring the midship hull form very close to the latest war design of the Imperial Navy - the Ersatz KÖNIGSBERG - class.

Has anybody an idea how to verify my results?

Many thanks in advance

Hi Peter K,

I know nothing about these calculations.

But I in 1996 I sailed to Cocos Keeling Atoll in the Indian Ocean.

When I left for the Chagos Archipelago
I sailed very close to North Keeling Island.

Unfortunately the swells were too large to anchor
there.
But I could see the very last remains of the
'Emden'.

She had been emergency-beached there after a short sharp battle
against the superior Australian cruiser 'Sydney',
in 1916?

Part of her crew had been left behind on
Direction Island on Cocos Keeling
to destroy the wireless station.

They did this.
Then they observed the battle
When they saw that their ship was lost
they hijacked the
'Ayeesha', a 3-masted copra schooner
belonging to the Clunies-Ross family.

They sailed her through the enemy-held Indian Ocean
then through the straits of
Bab-el-Mandeb(the Gate of Tears)
north to the Arabian shore of the Red Sea,
which was controlled by Germany's
Ally Turkey
- and apparently made it back to Germany
to fight another day.

...sent to you by another Peter K
from Austria...www.juprowa.com/kittel

ps: The remains I saw on the beach on N.Keeling Island
were the last pieces and erected like a gate,
presumably by the Japanese scrap steel salvagers

Hi PETER!

Thanks a lot for your information about the famous EMDEN (I) of the Imperial Navy. Of course I also know this story, but I am not sure, if I could ever see the Cocos Island with my own eyes as you did.

BTW, if I remember correctly, there is a gun of the EMDEN (I) mounted somewhere in Australia and is visible for the public there!

...
