Thank you very much for answering. What about the fate of the U-195-crew? And an additional question: What happend to the crew of U-219 after WW2? So far I know the crews of both boats were in Indonesia. Was the crew in Dutch custody? What caused the death of:

Monsun crews were taken prisoner by the Japanese in May 1945 and interned at Changi prison, Singapore, In 1946 they were taken to Britain and eventually all were repatriated in 1947.

U-196 is more of a mystery story with lots of conjecture. One of the more bizarre claims is that she was sighted being escorted into a Chilean Fjord by a Chilean cruiser. That is not altogether impossible given the large expatriate German population around Puerto Montt.

The more accepted explanation is that she struck a mine in the Sunda strait, however there are inconsistencies and contradictions in that explanation too.

U-196 was tasked to patrol around the south of Australia en-route to Kobe for replacement batteries.

The British Pacific Fleet with three carriers and some Battleships were also sailing from Trincomalee around Australia at the same time and the British fleet may indeed have been the intended target.

I'm in contact with the U-195 survivor Obergefreite M.Müller, at our site you see his picture (taken in 1999) at the grave from Oberleutnant z.See Friedrich Steinfeld.

See our site for further info: (use the tabs on the page also for picture's):

A strange story emerged in a New Zealand newspaper the Northern Advocate. A diver and museum curator claims descendants of crew or passengers on U-196 have come forward with a story that U-196 was scuttled off Kaipara harbour in Northern New Zealand. If true then the area is subject to lots of drifting sandbars so uncovering her wreck would be a miracle.

http://www.northernadvocate.co.nz/local ... ubsection=

Aspects of the story do not ring true to me. U-196 departed Bordeaux in mid March 1944. The claim is some of U-196's passengers transferred at sea in the Bay of Biscay from another U-boat which was sunk.

That does not tally with any other Asia bound U-boat in March 1944. U-851 which did disappear sailed from Kiel and not France.

U-180 which sailed from Bordeaux with U-195 and U-219 did sink in the Bay of Biscay off the Gironde Estuary was lost 21 August 1944. U-196 arrived at Penang in August 1944 and departed Djakarta 30 November 1944. U-219 and U-195 did reach Djakarta in November 1944. That is the only possible link up with U-196

The story has the character of a bizarre hoax to me.

From the nine German graves at Cikopo Plantation near the village of Arca Domas Bogor, it turns out the graveyard was a monument built by Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof, Federal Republic of German Embassy in Jakarta to honor fallen German soldiers.

A number of German personnel interned by the Dutch at the island of Onrust escaped and joined forces with the Indonesian Nationalists.

This information came from former U-195 crew who lived in Austria, Peter Marl and Martin Mueller came to the graveyard in 1999.

Leut. Ing Wilhelm Jens died 12.10.45 fighting with Indonesian nationalists against Dutch settlers

Kapt. Leutnant Hermann Tangermann died 23.8.45 died in an accident.

Oblt. z.S. and commander of U-195 Friederich Steinfeld died 30.11.45 in Singapore due to poor nutrition and dysentery

Schiffszimmermann Eduard Onnen died 15.4.45 uncertain

Leutnant z.S W. Martens died 10.45 in a train accident

Obgfr. Willi Petschow died 28.9.45 died because of illness while at Cikopo Plantation.

Oblt. z.S Willi Schlummer died 12.10.45 fighting with Indonesian nationalists against Dutch settlers

ObGefr Heinz Sparfeld, U-219 uncertain

Leutnant Dr. Heinz Haake headstone errected by his family postwar, but his body is not buried at Bogor.
