II.(Schlacht)/LG2.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; he goes a short history..........................

The II. (Schlacht) / LG2 - Brief History ...................

The lessons learned in Spain were recalled when the Sudetenland crisis deepened. The Luftwaffe decided to create five new groups of ground attack (Fliegergruppen). Three of them were fitted with Hs 123 - Fliegergruppe 10 in Brieg, the Fliegergruppe 50 in Grottkau and Fliegergruppe 30 in Bavaria.

After the Munich Agreement, which ended the crisis, the five Fliegergruppen were reassigned to new tasks, three of them for diving attack and one bombing group. Only one, the Fliegergruppe 10, continued as a ground attack unit, and retained its Hs 123s. In November 1938 this group joined the Lehrgeschwader 2, an experimental unit that aimed to investigate new aircraft and tactics. The group with Hs-123 was used to form the II. (Schlacht) / LG 2.

On September 1, 1939, the group participated in the invasion of Poland, operating as a light bomber and ground attack aircraft, carrying 50 kg bombs under its unequal span wings.

The fighting in Poland revealed a great advantage of the Hs 123 - it could operate from very basic airfields from which others more modern aircraft could not do. The II. (Schlacht) / LG 2 was able to follow closely the progress of the German armies into Poland and fly up to ten daily departures. As in Spain the aircraft engines, running at 1800 rpm, made a terrible noise that could sometimes cause panic in the Polish troops.

The Hs 123 was effective enough in Poland for the plans to replace it were canceled, and the II. (Schlacht) / LG 2 was still equipped with them in May 1940.

At the start of the campaign in the west the II. (Schlacht) / LG 2 was part of Fliegerkorps VIII, along with more than 350 Stukas. The Army Corps works as part of the Luftflotte 2, and the Hs 123s were used to support the Sixth Army as it advanced into Belgium. This changed quickly, and on May 13, the group was used to support the main attack across the Meuse at Sedan, operating as part of Luftflotte 3. The Hs-123s contributed in the race to the Canal, and helped defeat a French counterattack near Cambrai.

Hello to all :D; something more................
A Hs-123 with its destroyed landing gear on the airfield of Cambrai - France 1940
I could find this from a member of 12o'clockhigh-forum
the picture shows L2+BM of 4.(S)/LG2 force-landed with a wounded pilot, Lt. Siegfried Panten, on June 5, 1940, near Hallu, S of Chaulnes, France, at 10:30 AM. He subsequently died of his wounds and was initially given a field burial next to his plane.
I think the second photo shows this plane............Cheers. Raúl M 8).

Two different planes with the same plane's code BM? And both belly landed. Quite a coincident!

With best,
