Werner Goering, the nephew of Luftwaffe chief Herman Goering

Werner Goering, the nephew of Luftwaffe chief Herman Goering, and an American citizen, flew bombing missions over Germany as a command pilot for the 303rd Bomb Group. He was accompanied by his copilot, Jack Rencher, a sharpshooting, straight-talking Arizonan with a top-secret mission.

"During World War II, Herman Göring's nephew, Capt. Werner G. Göring, , piloted B-17s on 48 bombing missions against occupied Europe. He had been born and raised in Salt Lake City. Not unbelievably this young Göring spoke fluent German. After an extensive background check, he was assigned to the 303rd Bombardment Group (Hell's Angels) of the 8th Air Force, based at Molesworth, England.

This fact was kept secret by the Army Air Force during the time that young Göring flew missions against Nazi Germany. However, the AAF still assigned him a "uniquely qualified" co-pilot; one Jack P. Rencher, 1st Lieutenant. Rencher was given specific orders to shoot Werner if he ever tried to land in Germany. According to Rencher, however, the only time young Göring wasn't eager to rain destruction on Nazi Germany was when he had to bomb Cologne, where his grandmother still lived.

Werner G. Göring was born in 1924 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA. His parents were Karl Sr. and Atela Göring. He also had an older brother named Karl Göring Jr. born about 1913 (his participation or not is unknown on the allied side).

Then how about another nephew of a prominent Nazi who signed on and fought against his uncle? That was William Patrick Hitler, nicknamed "Willy" who joined the USN and was discharged honorably, with a good conduct medal and a Purple Heart. Born to Adolf's half-brother Alois Hitler Jr. and his first wife Bridget Dowling. As another oddity, and almost unbelievably, the man who signed William Patrick into the US navy carried the surname Hess. William Patrick Hitler served in the US Navy and later the Naval Medical Corps before being discharged in 1947.

After his discharge William Patrick Hitler changed his name, and lived in (apparently) obscurity in Long Island New York. His children also distanced themselves from Adolf, kept the altered name, and none of the sons produced children. This may have been a conscious attempt to "kill" the name of Hitler with them.

Great info! Thanks!

BTW, WIlliam Patrick was during 1937 or 1938 in Germany. He wanted to visit his uncle and get a job from him. Hitler refused and the two only met once. William partied, drank and told everyone he was a familymember of Adolf. He was 'asked' to leave the country and never returned. Then he became anti-Hitler.
Always in need for info about: Dutchmen in the NSKK, HJ and TeNo.

Just this morning I was watching a History special and it mentioned William and his mother living in England in a rented home.

They did not pay their rent and the day they suppose to show up at the Magistrate they had left for the USA.

I don't think he was very popular or trusted here either.

This remark was something someone else wrote, I know the name Hitler is and was and will be a name we here in Pennsylvania for years to come. Not every Hitler in the world should be judged or assumed to be like the one single Hitler we all know of. Nor should any individual with any name of any ethnic group be prejudged solely on their last name.

(After his discharge William Patrick Hitler changed his name, and lived in (apparently) obscurity in Long Island New York. His children also distanced themselves from Adolf, kept the altered name, and none of the sons produced children. This may have been a conscious attempt to "kill" the name of Hitler with them.)

Like our own Benedict Arnold who was a Traitor to our country during it's war with England. We still have many Arnold's living here who are all true patriots.

wow, incredible. Wonder if there are any photos of him and his aircraft, markings and nose art. Would make a good model-building project.

**Footnote to the above: Colonel Werner G. Goering was the U.S. Air Attaché in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia from 1960 to 1962. I served with him for a year during 1961-62 and saw him just about every day. He and his wife, June, were absolutely top of the line people who could not have been more gracious, generous and friendly. But there was one topic that was taboo: his familial connection to Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring. It was just a subject that was avoided. I also traveled all over Africa with him, his staff and their wives in the C-47 Attaché plane with Col. Goering at the controls and AF Maj. Barthelmus in the co-pilot's seat. It was a fun excursion that I shall never forget. After Ethiopia, Col. Goering lived in the Arlington/Virginia area for a number of years where he retired from the Air Force. He was still alive a few years ago and living in Arizona.
