Stukas In Poland

Post by jscott »

Dont know if this is the right section or what? But am curious as to who dropped the first bomb from a Stuka in the Poland campaign and if the crew survived the war or not. (I doubt it as death rates amoung Stuka crews were extremely high)
God Save Texas!!!

If you want to see what a group of pissed off Texans can acomplish, look no further than the Alamo and to San Jacinto.

Slightly off-topic, but might interest you. First air victory over Poland was achieved by Franck Neubert of I./StG 2. Immelmann.

Bridges in Tczew (Dirshau) was blown up by Poles on 5:30. Wehrmacht tried to capture bridges, so they sent panzerzug from Marienburg, and behind this armoured train Germans sent 41 engineers batalion + security unit. Polish rail workers on last moment redirect armoured train on dead end track, so Engineers were not able to capture and secure bridge.
In fact 4:30 German planes crossed border, and drop bombs around 4:40 on Tczew (Dirshau) railstation instalations. And the same time another German group of stukas drop bombs on Wielun. There was group under Wolfram Freiherr von Richthofen command.

Becouse bomb ride over Tczew-Dirshau was rather unsuccesful, and over Wielun very "succesful" (1200 kiled civilians, destroyed town), this second was taken as a first act of aggresion.

Fisrt Target

Post by tigre »

Hello folks.

The very first bombing attack of the WW II was carried out by a kette of Stukas from the 3./St G 1 lead by Hptm Bruno Dilley along with Lt Horst Shiller and Uffz Gerhard Grenzel. These three JU-87 Bs took off from the advance airfield at Elbing (East Prussia) on the morning of the 01 September 1939 and made its attack at 04:35 AM, a quarter of an hour before the main German attack. Their objective was the control and wiring of the demolition charges on the southern slopes of the enbankment of the Dirschau's bridges. To hit such a target the Stukas had been rehearsing for several days against a dummy target built near the air base of Insterburg (East Prussia). Each JU-87B carried a single 250 kilograms bomb and four 50 kilograms underwings bombs. The attacks were accurate but the armoured train which should have followed was delayed too long.

Hello to all :D; a new story related to this topic....................

Stukas over Gdingen ................

On September 1, 1939 shortly before noon a Reconnaissance plane Do 17P of the 2 (F). / 121 under Maj. Wenz and escorted by two Bf 109 of the I (J). / LG 1 flew over the city and port of Gdynia / Gdingen / Gotenhafen and received anti-aircraft artillery fire of Polish vessels anchored and moored in the area. Shortly afterwards the formation of Stukas were sent to Gdynia; the II. / StG 2 (Hauptmann Ulrich Schmidt) with 30 Ju 87 would attack the positions of the coastal defense artillery, while the III. / StG 2 (Hauptmann Ernst Ott) leading 33 Ju 87 would attack the harbor area and the vessels there. Fulfilling escort mission would fly the 30 Bf 110 of the I / ZG 1 (Maj. Huth).

The bombing was very accurate and a surprise to the Polish defenders so their air defense was almost symbolic. Following the air strike the torpedo boat ORP "Mazur" broke in two and sank dying half of the crew. The same fate suffered by the auxiliary vessel ORP "Nurek" where they survived 6 of a crew of 22. It was sunk also the small tugboat "Wanda".

Stukas over Gdingen ................

After the attack one Ju-87B was hit by small arms fire from the Polish infantry and got a hit in the cooler, which led that the engine caught fire shortly afterwards and crash landed in a swamp.

After destroying the documentation, the crew began walking through the 20 kilometers from the landing site to the German lines. On the way the pilot was killed (a Uffz) while the gunner, Gefr. Rohr, finally reached his goal.

Any chance of identifying the Staffelkapitän and/or the stuka unit? Cheers. Raúl M 8).

Hello to all :D; a little more, this time with the I. / St G 1 of Hptm Paul-Werner Hozzel ........................

The Mlawa Bunker Line .

Under a blue autumn sky lies the airfield in a strip of land free of trees, there reigns the silence of waiting, shall come the order for taking off? Suddenly a tingling at the aerodrome, the order for taking off.

In a short time the crews are in place, the engines come to life and purr on the taxiway and then the first kette rises towards the sky. With an iron firmness the pilot raises his machine meter by meter, 1000, 2000, 3000 meters. The ground beneath us was like a mosaic of colors. The liaison between the airplanes is made through the larynx microphone and the same with the ground stations.

Hello to all :D; more follows........................

The Mlawa Bunker Line.

The goal is a Polish fortified defensive line composed of bunkers, so we must destroy them and break the enemy's strongpoints. The objective is close and came the order to attack. The Stukas adopt a formation of "flying geese", all the crews' energy is concentrated in accomplish the mission. When the leader reaches the target he dives, 30/40 meters behind follows the second plane and then the rest of the squadron...........

The target, far below, is aimed with the whole plane. The objective is fixed in the sights and the soil grows bigger faster and faster as the diving becomes more pronounced. The pilot releases the heavy bomb strapped to the belly of the plane and recover the aircraft from its dive. The blood boils in my veins and there is a great pressure of the body against the seat.................

Hello to all :D; last part........................

The Mlawa Bunker Line.

Again the plane is flying at a few hundred meters away the ground and it continues its journey. Behind huge columns of smoke were rising, that took the form of a fan, as our Stukas' squadron had been flying. A reconnaissance aircraft provides information about the effectiveness of the raid. In front of our own troops there is no obstacle anymore.
