4.SS-Polizei-Panzergrenadier-Division

Post by Massimiliano Afiero »

A new book about SS-Polizei-Division, write by Massimiliano Afiero

The Polizei division is one of the less well-known and less-treated Waffen SS formations, chiefly because of its only unit affiliation to the Waffen SS itself, being mainly formed with elements of the German Police and the Army. Initially, it was dealt with as a second level formation and was therefore equally equipped and armed. Even with regard to its use in the forefront, it was always committed as a reserve force, especially during the country's western front in the 1940s. But as often happened in the history of the Waffen SS, even for Polizei the fire test will serve to make it To become an elite formation thanks in particular to the exemplary behavior of his wards and commanders on the battlefield and in February 1942, he was finally transformed into a true SS formation, officially becoming the SS-Polizei Division. The division remained at the forefront of the East, still in the Leningrad area, until 1944. Meanwhile, its reorganization and its transformation into a unit of armored grenadiers was started and some of its departments were engaged in Greece, since 1943, participating in the struggle against the partisan bands and the harsh reprisals against the local civilian population. Then they fought in Banat, Romania, Hungary and along the Slovak border. The complete division at the beginning of 1945 was transferred to Pomeranian to participate in the counter-offensive to deport the Soviets from the territory of the Reich and then to the Gdańsk bridge head. Eventually, the Polizei departments came to fight in the northwestern area of Berlin, opposing them with all of their advance forces in the Red Army departments, sacrificing themselves to the last, then settling down and surrendering to the troops Allies. As has been done for all the other volumes in this same collection, dedicated to Waffen SS divisions, the discussion of the topics is accompanied by numerous testimonies, documents, extracted from the official bulletins, the division diary of the division and hundreds of photos and maps . The appendices also show the (short) history of 35.SS 'Polizei II'.

244 pages, color cover, many photos and documents.
