Nothing. Both indicate a military band.

Hans,
In the book that I am reading, they specifically mention both of these entities as separate.

Hi Helmut,
Interesting. Checked with all my German aquaintances who still reckon there is no difference. Interestingly enough Musikzug does not appear in any dictionary I possess. That said, like you I have come across both terms in books. Would be interested to know if there is in fact a different interpretation. My mother always used Musikzug.

Hans,

Thank you for your input.

Here is what it says:

Seit Aufbau des Bataillons bestand auch der Spielmannszug (SG) unter Hscha. Miethke und der Musikzug (MZ) unter dem unverggesslichen Ustuf. Max Pausch.

From this I gather that they are two separate establishments. It's confusing to me.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Helmut,
Certainly seems that there is a difference. I've had an idea, but have no idea if I'm on the right track.
Spielmanszug is definatelly THE military band, used for military purposes, parades etc.
The Musikzug could be the more informal band, ie., the band used for dances in the officers mess, public performances etc., etc. I guess its composition would be made up of members of the Spielmanszug. But why a different leader.
Now I'm as confused as you are.
Hope someone can clear it up.

Hi Hans,
Your idea certainly sounds plausible. What confuses me though is that if the MZ is a part of the SZ then why is it's leader of a higher rank. You are right, it is very confusing.

Thanks for all your help.

Servus Hans,

As I read it, theMZ is more or less, a drum and bugle corps where as the SZ is the entie band? It would make sense.

Thank you and let me know if you find out anything else. You have been very helpful.

Servus Helmut,

The latest from Germany from my cousin [Armoured Div.]:

"Es gibt keinen Unterschied es sind einfach nur zwei verschiedene Namen für ein und das gleiche."
