A spot of poetry

Post by Richard Hargreaves »

which I've had a crack at

Landesschützen, Landsknechtleben
Hei, wie ist das wunderfein!
Frohe Lieder in der Kehle,
Ist im Becher auch kein Wein.
Wir sind stets auf unserm Posten,
Ob im Norden oder Süd,
Ob im Westen oder Osten,
Überall ist unser Lied

Landeschützen, Landsknechtleben,
Hei, wie klingt das Lied so schön,
Lied der Ferne, Lied der Heimat,
Lied der Täler, Lied der Höhn.
Mag der Sturm auch noch so brausen,
Mag es noch so finster sein:
Nein, wir kennen keine Flausen,
Landesschützen wolln wir sein!

Und ist einst der Sieg errungen,
Und führt uns der Weg nach Haus,
Ja, dann wird aufs Neu gesungen,
Wird gesungen mit Gebraus:
Wir warn stets auf unserm Posten,
Ob im Norden oder Süd,
Ob im Westen oder Osten,
Überall war unser Lied!
Landesschützen, the life of a mercenary
Hey, it's wonderful!
Happy songs in our throats,
There's no wine in our cups.
We're always in our positions,
Whether it's the North or South,
Whether it's the West or East,
Our song is everywhere.

Landesschützen, the life of a mercenary,
Hey, that song sounds so beautiful.
Songs of faraway, songs of home,
Songs of the valleys, song of the * Höhn *.
The storm might continue to rage,
The storm may roar also so,
It might be so dark,
No, we do not know such nonsense,
We want to be Landesschützen!

And once we've achieved victory,
And our path takes us home,
Ja, then we'll sing once more,
Sing with a roar:
We were always at our posts
Whether it's the North or South,
Whether it's the West or East,
Our song was everywhere!
I'm guessing it's Austrian or Bavarian - which makes sense as it was found in the papers of Wehrkreis XVIII (Salzburg).

No idea what "Höhn" is - other than its probably not the community in the Palatinate... :[]

Hey Richard, nice find!

Höhn is just short for Höhen, which means highs or hills.
