Oberleutnant Witzig

My grandfather and some of his men were sightseeing Eben-Emael in early Spring 1941, shortly before their transfer to Poland for Barbarossa. He took lots of snapshots of the fort with pencilled comments on the back. Also photos of himself and his men poking around the bunkers and whatnot. Amongst this lot is a photo of Oberleutnant Witzig, which my grandfather captioned on the back "Ritterkreuzträger Oblt. Witzig - Fallschirmjägertruppe".

My question is, was Witzig or Witzig's unit, in Eben-Emael at this time (April 1941)? In other words, did my grandfather meet the Ritterkreuzträger, or was he perhaps given or sold a souvenir photograph of him?

The cut, size, shape, colour of the photo is much like the others I have of Eben-Emael.

Thanks.

Witzig would surely have been preparing for the invasion of Crete in May. The photo must have been taken earlier, in the Winter of 1940/41, for propaganda purposes. Sorry for bothering everybody.

Enjoy the photograph though.
