Siegfried Knappe?

Post by Engel242 »

Hey,

I am considering reading Siegfried Knappe's novel Soldat as soon as I can afford it. I'm curious though on what unit(s) he served in throughout his military service (since he obviously seemed to have gotten around).

Soldat is not a novel, it is an interesting personel memoir. Get it from the library, its very cheap that way. :D

I'm sorry, you're right, novel is not the right term to use. I was aware it was a memoir.

Also, my local library does not have a copy of it, unfortunately.

I cannot recall exactly which units he participated in, but he became an artillery officer early in the war (1941-1942, I believe) and spent most of the later war years as a staff officer at various commands.

Knappe was in 1/24 Artillery of the 24th ID in the prewar Army. However, upon mobilization 20 percent of the unit was used as cadre for a 2d Wave division, the 87th, which was staffed with reservists. Knappe was part of the 20 percent. Accordingly Knappe served in France and Russia with 1/187 Arty.
He also was in the next to last class at the War Academy. The last class never graduated.
