Post by noeneors »

Hello searchers,
I'm belgian searcher from Meuse Belgium area.
I'm looking for picture of Leutnant Zabel who arrived first next to Yvoir bridge on 12 may 1940.
I'm working for "Musée du souvenir 1940 Bataille de la Meuse" in Haut-le-Wastia as administrator.
Thank you for helping

Hello Serge.
Imho I think that the right spelling of his name is Zobel and not Zabel
I find out that a certain Leutnant Heinz ZOBEL was at Yvoir in may 1940.
Unfortunately I have no picture.
Zobel was an Deutsches Kreuz in Gold bearer. I think, but I am not sure, that he was awarded in 1942 with the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold
Kindly regards
Prosper

Hello Prosper
Many thanks for your reply.
We find in some text "Zabel" and found as well a guy with name "Zobel" (same person?) and his panzer (IV?) fall in Meuse in Bouvigne area.
The museum has a picture of this panzer release from the river in 1941.
Searching continue...
Many thanks
Serge

Hello noeneors :D; glad on hearing about you again..............

Panzerzug Lt. Zobel.

On May 12, 1940 at 16:45 hours the 2./H (Pz) 31 reported that both bridges (Yvoir and Houx) on the Meuse were destroyed, however the report proved be false. Around 17:30 hours the Panzerstosstrupp Zobel (tanks of the 5. and 6. Companies) reached the heights located east of Yvoir, observing that the bridge was intact. Two panzerspähwagen and one medium tank Platoon under Lt. Zobel raced to the bridge through the stream of refugees. Both recce vehicles (spähwagen) reached the bridge while a tank furnished fire support against a Belgian antitank gun across the river.

As the first recce vehicle was crossing, a Belgian sapper (Lt. De Wispelaere) blew the bridge (with the German vehicle and refugees) in the sky. De Wispelaere was killed by the fire of the German tanks in turn. The tank of Lt. Zobel got a hit on its roller drive.

In the evening of May 13, 1940 two ferries of 8 tons were built. The attempt of shifting one Pz Kw IV across failed, and the repaired tank of Lt. Zobel, fell into the river and sunk.

Hope it be useful. Cheers. Raúl M 8).
