Hauptmann Hemmerich, Erwin (Kdr Pi.Btl 326)

Post by Christian »

I am looking for information about Hauptmann Hemmerich, Erwin (Kdr Pi.Btl 326). I suspect that he led 3./Pi.Btl. 106 in 1942 and was awarded the German Cross in Gold during this assignment. Can anybody confirm and provide further details?
Thanks in advance.

Hello Christian!

Erwin Hemmerich received the DKiG on 01.04.1942 as a Leutnant in 3./Pi.Btl. 106. Source: Patzwall & Scherzer (2001), although Scherzer states in his "Ritterkreuzträger (2005) that the award date for Hemmerich's DKiG was 01.03,1942.

I suppose that you already know that Erwin Hemmerich received the RK on 28.03.1945 as a Hauptmann and Kdr. Pi.Btl. 326 but that he had died on 19.03.1945. Source: Scherzer (2005).

As far as the DKiG award is concerned in 1942, it appears that this was a result of actions around the 20th-21st of December 1941. During this time 3./Pi.Btl. 106 was attached to Infanterie Regiment 240 and it held positions near Iwanowskaja against strong Russian attacks. Does anybody have details about these actions in addition to what is available online?
Thanks in advance!
Best Regards,

I am still looking for details about actions involving 3./Pi.Btl. 106 and Infanterie Regiment 240 in the area of Iwanowskaja (20th-21st of December 1941).
In addition, I would like to know if there is an organization I might contact in Germany to secure some further records about the military career and maybe a photo of Erwin Hemmerich.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
