Gen. d. Inf. Wilhelm Wegener

Post by Richard Murphy »

Back to the serious stuff!

According to the listings at TRF, Wegener was commander of the 32nd Inf. Div. from 1/6/42-27/6/43, when he was replaced by Alfred Theilmann, but briefly returned to command from 16th August until 12th September.
However, according to Lexiconderwehrmacht, Theilmann handed his post over to an Oberst Wagner (No Christian name given.) on 12th August and it was he that handed over to Boeckh-Behrens on 15th September.
The biographical listings here don't really shed any light on it, simply listing Wegener's command as running from 1/6/42-1/9/43.

Any clarifications would be most appreciated.

Finally, does anyone know the circumstances surrounding his death whilst in charge of L Korps on 24th September 1944?

Hi Rich,

Here’s what Kurt Mehner says in Die deutsche Wehrmacht 1939-1945: Führung und Truppe (Militair-Verlag Klaus D. Patzwall, Norderstedt, Germany, 1993):

32nd Infantry Division:

1 June 1942-27 June 1943: GL Wilhelm Wegener
27 June 1943-15 August 1943: GM Alfred Thielmann
15 August 1943-1 September 1943: GL Wilhelm Wegener
15 September 1943-1 February 1944: GL Hans Boeckh-Behrens

Unfortunately, Mehner leaves a gap from 1-15 September 1943 in this divisional listing.

Per French L. MacLean in Quiet Flows the Rhine: German General Officer Casualties in World War II (J.J. Fedorowicz Publishing, Winnipeg, Canada, 1996), General der Infanterie Wilhelm Wegener was killed by a Russian air attack on 24 September 1944 wile en route to visit one of his infantry divisions in Courland.
