Hello!
Dies anyone have any data on Hauptmann Hans Schober, 17th Artillery Regiment, who supposedly received the German Cross in Gold in the summer of 1944?

I am afraid not. I do however know that he was killed in action in 1945, probably when his division (17th Infantry) was completely mauled by the Russian winter offensive in January.
By that time he was a Major (promoted in October 1944).

Then it could be this one:
name: Schober
first name: Hans
rank: Major
date of birth: June 19th 1917
place of birth: Nürnberg
date of death/missed: January 14th 1945
place of death: near Zwolen

Mr Schulz or whatever,
I find your comment/question insulting (which I suppose is the whole meaning with it...) and I will refrain from wasting any time on it.
Greetings

Hello!

I am living in Poland and I know Zwolen city very well.
From old people storys I know that during January 1944 offensive, close Zwolen area have been killed so many german soldiers, that most of them have been funeraled in the forests.
Two yers ago, father of mine reported to German organization in Poland about 7 graves wchich he know about since his childrenhood.
All of them had metal I.D in his mouths , but I dont know the numbers...
It seems probable that Germans have been supprised by Russian soldiers , most of them remained in the back when soviet tanks moved rapidly forward. I am convinced that before January offencive German soldiers were aware of inevitability of death.

Yes, Hauptmann d.R. Hans Schober did recieve the German Cross in Gold on June 16, 1944 while commanding I./AR 17 of the 17. Infanterie-Division. This Division fought in southern Ukraine in the Spring and Summer of 1944, while belonging to the 6. Armee.
