Hello to all :D; reading something about this, something awoke my interest ..........................

Stug Abt 192 - jun 1941.

Activation.

In late 1940, two detachments of assault guns (Stug. Abt. 192 and Stug. Abt. 197) were to be activated by the VII./Artillerie-Lehr-Regiment in Jüterbog close Berlin. Particularly the Stug. Abt. (Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung) 192 was activated on November 25, 1940 with a command group and three assault batteries and HQ battery, originally as sturmartillerie-Abt. 192. On February 7, 1941 received the final name of Stug. Abt. 192.

Commander: Hptm. Erich Hammon
                    Adj. Olt. Bauer

1. Battery: Olt. von Bünau
2. Battery: Olt. Bumm
3. Battery: Olt. Freiherr von Jena
HQ Battery: Olt. Stier

Deployment and mission.

During the deployment to run Operation Barbarossa, the Stug. Abt. 192 moved to a wooded area around Janow Podlaski on May 28, 1941 and once there was attached to the 31. ID of Generalmajor Kurt Kalmukoff. The ground assigned to the division did not offer good positions to place heavy weapons and high bushes blocked the action of heavy machine guns, for that reason the infantry was forced to attack without adequate fire support. Therefore the task of the assault gun detachment was to move quickly with their weapons on the bank of the Bug and support the infantry during the crossing.

Building a 4 ton ferry will take about 4 hours, but in the sector was not a covered position to perform this task; on the other hand there was the possibility that the railway bridge Terespol - Brest-Litovsk was destroyed, so there was not another option more than fording the river with the assault guns. Two fords had been located in the area where the depth was one meter and a half, however in the last 20 meters the depth was about 2/3 meters.

The Commander of the 3. / Stug. Abt. 192 worked hard to waterproof their guns so they could dive and cross the river on the first day of the attack. Exhaust pipes were extended and a pipe was attached to the vehicle hatch to suck fresh air; a compressor was installed to pump water from inside the vehicle and all the vehicle's slits and openings were sealed. In all, seven vehicles were ready to "dive" on the Bug River.

Does anyone have any idea whether they were actually used in action across the river? considering that the railway bridge was captured intact.

TIA. Cheers. Raúl M 8).

Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Stug Abt 192 - jun 1941.

Barbarossa.

In the period from 13 to 20 June 1941, the 1. and 3. Batteries of Stug Abt. 192 prepared its fortified positions on the Bug River (working only at night), OPs, carried out reconnaissance and marking of the paths of approach.

On June 22, 1941 began Operation Barbarossa (invasion of the Soviet Union) and in that opportunity the Stug. Abt 192 supported the attack of IR 82 (Oberst Hossbach) of the 31. ID within the XII AK. The assault guns furnished support to the regiment, attacking north of the city of Brest-Litovsk, according to the following deployment:

1. Battery support III./IR 82 (Major Zenker).
3. Battery support I./IR82 (Major Bantje).
2. Battery was attached to the 45. ID which attacked the fortress of Brest-Litovsk.

After the start of operations, six assault guns of the 1. Battery, under the lead of the Commander of Abteilung, Hptm Hammon, crossed the Bug by the railway bridge which was captured intact. After the first moment of surprise Soviet soldiers reacted and in the struggles that followed were disabled three assault guns. The advance continued however eastward toward the airfield, that place was seized with the help of the assault guns. By nightfall of June 22, 1941 about 15 vehicles were still in service.

I think it was a Stug III Ausf. C/D.

Stug Abt 192 - jun 1941.

Barbarossa.

As progress continues eastward the fighting intensifies and the assault guns will be used in increasingly difficult conditions such as in forested areas. From the beginning till mid-July 1941 the Stug. Abt. 192 was attached to the XXXXVII. Armee-Korps (mot.) In Generaloberst Guderian's 2 Armored Group. As of July 16, 1941 it will reinforce the 2. AOK always in the Army Group Centre.
