Which parts of XIX Pz Corps passed through Danzig, Sept. 39?

Post by sid guttridge »

I have read that due to a shortage of undamaged bridges over the Vistula, parts of of XIX Panzer Corps were diverted through Danzig territory in the second week of September 1939. Does anyone know which parts? I suspect 10th Panzer Division was one.

Many thanks,

Sid.

Hi Sid,

Actually, at that time, 10 PzD was part of XIX A.K. (no Pz.K. yet), having been transfered from XXI A.K. on Sept. 9. Unfortunately, I can't see that any of the XIX A.K. units passed through Danzig on their way into Poland. By the second week of the war all XIX A.K. units were closing in on Brest on the Bug River. However, 10 PzD DID pass through Danzig on their way out of Poland at the end of the month.

Hi Jerry and Pirx,

Thanks.

Guderian's memoirs state that XIX (Pz) Corps crossed the Vistula in two places, Medem on the Polish/East Prussian border and Kasemark, which is in Danzig territory (although not through the city itself).

Cheers,

Sid.

"The 10 Panzer Division, which up to then had formed part of Kuechler's army, together with the Fortress Infantry Brigade Loetzen, a newly formed unit of men from the older age-groups, were now subordinated to my XIX Corps: both these units were at present in action along the Narev in the neighborhood of Vizna.... This took place at Arys between 02.00 and 04.30 hrs. on September 9th."

Hi Tigre,

Many thanks. That answers my question with a precision beyond anything I could expect.

Argentina was the home of one of the best military historians I have come across - Juan Beverina. Have you come across his books on early Argentine military history? It amazes me that British authors never use his work on Spanish colonial defence in 1806. The definitive English-language work on the 1806-1807 campaign has not yet been written because Beverina's work is never consulted. If Beverina had not been writing on purely Argentine subjects I think he would have a considerable international reputation.

Cheers,

Sid.

P.S. Does the Circulo Militar still publish military history books?

Hello Sid, what a surprise, I did not expect that someone beyond ours frontier know him, nice surprise indeed. Yes, I did; sometime ago I read "La Guerra del Paraguay" another superb book. This was another neglected war of our continent.

With regards to Beverina's work, I think he wrote about those subjects because the Argentine's military history in the XIX century is rich. The country was fighting almost the time; against England (1806-1807), against Spain (1810-1821- ours troops after crossing the Andes towards Chile, reached the Chimborazo in Ecuador and joined there with Gral Bolivar's troops), against Brazil (1825-1828), The Malvina's invasion (by England 1833 onwards), against the Anglo-French coalition (1845-1848) and finally against Paraguay (1865-1870). I'm agree with you, great military historian although less known. Take care and best wishes. Tigre.

Hello to all :D; a little complement.............

Building a bridge over the Vistula in Mewe with Herber (Herbert-Brückengerät) material by the Pi Btl 42 - September 1939.

On the morning of September 2, 1939, came the order to build a bridge over the Vistula with Herbert material. The battalion moved to the area of Rehhof. Reconnaissance for the construction of the bridge should start immediately. Border Guard troops crossed the Vistula to Gniew. Gniew and the West Bank was in German hands at 14:00 hours. From 17:00 hours onwards the 3rd Company with inflatable boats and ferries shipped more units of the border guard until the morning of September 3, 1939. Its task was to establish a bridgehead to protect the building site. For transporting the material, stored in a forest, it was assigned a column of 15 men under a Feldwebel and 12 trucks. Another column should arrive on September 3 at 07:00 hours. The 1. / Brücken-Bau-Bataillon 521 was attached to the battalion. Hauptmann Truschnigg of the HQ of Pionier-Regiment z.b.V. was assigned as expert on Herbert material.

On the morning of September 3 the 1. Company reached Schadewinkel, the 2. Company Weißenberg and the 3. Company a farm northwest of the construction site in Neu-Liebenau. Hauptmann Franzke, chief of the 3. / Pi 42, is in charge of the task. When ordered the construction, the 1. / Pi 42 assembly 8 sections of bridge upstream and downstream of the site; the 2. / Pi 42 gathered in Weißenberg 20 boats moored together and towed by boats-M to the site of the bridge. The 3. / Pi 42 built the access on both sides of the bridge, the necessary wood is brought from a deposit in Marienburg and wedges, nails and other utensils are purchased at hardware stores in the area; the stock available is small to face the project. Until the arrival of antiaircraft units the 1. and 3. Companies are in charge of the AA defense, while the 1. / Brücken-Bau-Bataillon 521 is used for transport and movement of materials. The weather is warm and pleasant.

On September 4 reach a heavy AA battery and half of light AA battery and assume the AA cover in the building site. At 18:00 hours the access and two bridge sections are completed. On September 5 also the 2. / Brücken-Bau-Bataillon 521 was attached, at noon the situation is as follows: access and five bridge sections completed, four sections of the superstructure in place. On September 06 there were drawn and assembled the last sections of the bridge; some of the Herbert sections were anchored in the flat sandbanks. At 18:00 hours the bridge is ready and a load test is performed with a car and 4 heavy vehicles.

At 19:00 hours the Pionier-Regiment z.b.V. was informed of the completion of the task, the bridge has a length of 300 meters. The 1. / Pi 42 is responsible for the operation of the bridge. The 3. / Pi 42 is reserve, the companies are relieved every 24 hours. Checkpoint was the crossroads Schadewinkel - Zanowo, Mewe - Zandersfelde. From 19:00 hours it began crossing the 2. ID (Mot) and the transit from Mewe over the bridge went all night long................... .......

Hello to all :D; a little more.............

Building a bridge over the Vistula in Mewe with Herber (Herbert-Brückengerät) material by the Pi Btl 42 - September 1939.

Also on September 7, 1939 the traffic continued all day on the bridge. The only breaks were those absolutely necessary to perform repair works. Until 19:45 hours had passed an anti-aircraft regiment, HQ of the division and Nebel-Abt 2. The following were the wheeled vehicles of the 3. Panzer Division. Within 24 hours passed the Artillerie-Regiment 48, Aufklärungs-Abteilung 3 Panzersperrabteilung 48 (an antitank element ??), Kradschützen-Bataillon 3 and Panzerabwehr-Abteilung 39. In order to protect the bridge the heavy tracked vehicles can only cross during the daylight, it was found that the intermediate distances of less than 3 meters are not practical on a bridge Herbert device.

The subordination of the 1st Company of Brücken-Bau-Bataillon 521 ended. Also on September 8, 1939 many vehicles rolled over the bridge. From 00:10 to 02:50 hours crossed the MG-Bataillon 2 of the 3. Panzer-Brigade and Schützen-Regiment 6, part of Artillerie-Regiment 68, Nachrichten-Abteilung 623, Sanitäts-Abteilung 1, Nachschubkolonne ( supplies) of 2. Infanterie-Division, Feldgendarmerie of the 2. Infanterie-Division, 9. Staffel of Lehrgeschwader of the Luftwaffe, part of Nebel-Abt of the 2. Infanterie-Division and Bäckerei-Kompanie (bakery) of the 2. Infanterie-Division.

At 4:10 hours began to cross the 3. Panzer Division with Schützen-Regiment 3, Panzer-Nachrichten-Abteilung 39, Instandsetzungstrupp (maintenance) of the Flak-Lehr-Regiments, Pionier-Bataillon 39, Artillerie-Regiment 75, Panzer -Abwehr-Abteilung 2 of the 2. Infanterie-Division. From 8:30 hours the crossing was suspended due to repair works on the bridge deck. The bridge must be realigned again for warpage of 3 sections. The weather is warm and pleasant at all times. At 10:45 hours the bridge is released. From 14:15 hours crossed the Panzer-Regimenter 5 and 6, in addition to Panzer Lehr-Abt...............
