Re: flamethrower allocation to US units

Mad Dog
Flamethrowers in the US Army were considered a chemical weapon, not an item of engineer equipment, so were held by the Chemical Service. They would be issued from Chemical Depot Companies as needed.

Cheers!

Re: US Tank Battalion doctrine

By mid 1944, a US non-divisional tank battalion consisted of 4 companies; 3 companies of M-4 (59 total) and 1 company of light tanks (17 total). Was it doctrine to keep the types of tank in their own company, or was it more common to mix the tanks together to form 4 composite companies, each with M...

Re: facts you wont find on the History Channel

other than your snide ad-hominum commentary, care to contribute any solid information that refutes his "odious" book and his "bizarre world view" , or is your opinion too nuanced for all of us little people to understand? Snide? Really? It was a factual commentary. Buchanan's re...

Re: facts you wont find on the History Channel

From Patrick Buchanan: Anyone care to disagree on Mr Buchanan's hypothesis? Actually this is quite old news and is based upon Buchanan's rather odious neo-isolationist book published in 2005. There have been numerous threads wasting time discussing his bizarre world view, but I don't see much point...

Re: How to obtain AAR?

Sorry, if this is in the wrong section. How is it possible for a non-American citizen to obtain WW2 After Action Reports of some of the infantry and armored divisions from NARA? The only way is to either come to the US and hunt for them yourself or hire a professional researcher to do it for you. T...

Re: FMS-P-154 through P-189

The P-series of the Foreign Military Studies contain some documents on German division that otherwise are not covered in other FMS documents. Unfortunately, trying to find P-154 through P-189 is difficult. A call to NARA gave an answer of "we dont have those". Now, I know some exist - I h...

Re: Steve Zaloga--Is He a Competant Author?

Returning to Zaloga, can anyone figure out this piece of obscuration on page 18 of the "M-24 Chaffee tank" Osprey booklet, speaking about Korea: "Besides serving in the light tank companies in each of the three heavy tank battalions, M24 tanks also served in the reconnaissance compan...

Re: Steve Zaloga--Is He a Competent Author?

My problem with the Armored Thunderbolt is Zaloga´s failure to see that what suits Jupiter may not suit Mars. I.e. he does not seem to understand that Germany was in NO position to try to win by quantity alone. I confess I haven't been reading it line by line in one sitting...frankly I've been goin...

Re: Steve Zaloga--Is He a Competent Author?

...all that matters is that YOU are happy. So when did Zaloga pee in YOUR cornflakes? So far your criteria for his book writing competence seems to be based upon how he judges at modeling contests...pardon me if the only thing that strikes me about that is a great big WTF? Since you can's se...

Re: Steve Zaloga--Is He a Competent Author?

I can't help but think that if so many people want to criticize, mayhap they should go out and strive to do better? Tom, writing is hard work. That's something you find out when you try it. And writing so that you satisfy everyone and cover all the bases and get everything right is an impossibility...

Re: Steve Zaloga--Is He a Competent Author?

I'm not saying they are any better either. Okay, so then who is better then? Or does nobody meet your criteria? It's very simple...if you are writing on a novel subject which requires original investigation & deduction, and you are not footnoting your sources, your work is worthless. And prolif...

Re: Steve Zaloga--Is He a Competent Author?

I just saw his new book in the store a few minutes ago...surprise surprise...no footnotes. Another "trust me-I'm Steve Zaloga" book. Um, to be fair, the same could be said of Jentz and Hunnicutt, as well as many other authors. :D BTW, I know the sources he used and so far cannot sa...

Re: Operation Goodwood / 23rd Hussars

I would also be very interested in finding out about any other engagements his Regiment was involved in prior to his death. I believe, for example, that the 23rd Hussars were used heavily in the battle for Hill 112. André Hi André, I would suggest you contact the Tank Museum, Bovington. They have c...
