Re: For those of you who have researched Panzer Div. records
Thank you Sam, useful info. I will take a look at some NARA rolls, but will still end up at Freiburg probably. When I was researching Stalingrad some years ago, I had the opportunity to go to Freiburg & was astonished to see how much more they had that NARA hadn't photographed btw, not looking f...

For those of you who have researched Panzer Div. records
I am going to hire a researcher at Freiburg and my goal is to find the Panzer strength for several divisions in Russia in 1942. Specifically, I want to know the PzIVF2/G strength in a few units throughout the year, including replacements. Is it sufficient to just have them look at the divisional rec...

I guess I'm not too familiar with the crimes committed in the past, as this is a really old thread. I'll leave it to you whether or not to bring me up to speed.

Yeah, anyway, the publisher made a good call do publish this book as did JJF with the 23PD. The Caucasus is going to be at the top of the list for strategic concerns this century, and many people are going to examine the brief German experience down there

Funny you should say that. Nearly the whole book is devoted to frigid women. De Beauvoir is the like the female Sigmund Freud.Rotanhäntäpistin wrote:The hell will freeze over before I read de Beauvoir!

The translator's duty is to maintain the style of the original, not to rewrite the text. Very true. That should be an editorial decision. A classic case in poor translation: http://www.amazon.com/Second-Sex-Simone-Beauvoir/dp/0307265560/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1305930784&sr=1-2-fkmr...

I keep picking up this book & the writing keeps getting to me. There are so many English majors out there...it would be a good idea to employ one to rewrite books like these.

Re: Explosive New Book about Kursk Coming out in May
Totally agree that mobile defense was the way to go. Even if the Germans had chopped off the whole Kursk salient and even with a third of the casualties, where were they expecting to go? No fuel. I can't understand that after the Germans had underestimated the Soviet reserves both in 1941 & 1942...

Has anyone had any luck reading this? The grammar is putting me to sleep. And the, excessive, German-esque, use of, commas. Is it me? Is there hope?

I jumped ahead to Libya, and can say that I would be quite lost if I hadn't read "Rommel's War in Africa" by Heckmann first. Nice details in the PR5 book, but Heckmann really allowed me to appreciate those details better (wrt the drive to & battle for Tobruk as an example).

Re: Explosive New Book about Kursk Coming out in May
Gee, I've never been happier that I chose to ignore Kursk all these years. I never bought into it's strategic significance, regardless of the famous tank battle. So if we take away the big tank battle at Prokhorovka, what does this do to the big picture of how we should view the battle & outcome...
