A former RN dive-officer I know was nearly killed diffusing WW2 mines off Leith in the earrly 60's. 2 fellow sailors were killed.

Re: What single weapon was the most crucial to Germany?

Disaggree Seewolf. Even today the USMC says their best weapon is the rifleman! So its the Jager, Landser, the Feldgrau the Grunt the PBI ...what ever you call him

Re: German lowboots and leather gaiters

Probably a photo from transitional period where Reichswehr gaiters still being worn. Seems many of the troops are wearing the pre m36 feldbluse with dark feldgrau collars?

Re: New Section

Isn't that a bit ironic for a website called feldgrau, that Das Heer has only just got a section?
I am assuming Das Heer was the largest german military organisation, no?

Re: German medics in WW2

Chris, what about the more advanced medical facilities in the infantry division, ie the medical battalion that manned the field hospital? I assume these wore blue waffenfarbe and like today, had higher proportions of Doctors/officers and senior NCO's. Was there much movement of "caduceus wearer...

All early DAK armoured infantry wore grass green and were called Pz grens from 1942 onwards.
Some infantry units wearing white (eg MG abt) made it to Tunisia in 1943

The beret can look ridiculous as worn by many modern Army recuits. Time and care is needed to mold the US beret into proper shape:only paras and special forces seem to do this well! Meant as a roll up ready to wear item, the modern US beret is a failure. It is too big, and floppy! Contrast the tight...

Tan unifrom? This is a most likely a feldgrau wool panzer unifrom ("wrapper" and trousers)worn by Heer armoured panzerjager or panzerman. Stug crews usually wore collar dopplelitzen being artillery, not totenkopfs. But later in the war the diffrence between panzerjager and stug dissappeare...

The color of recce units (Abteilung) waffenfarbe is complicated . Varies from unit to unit and uniquely (for WH) can even vary within the unit. (the armoured car element, often different to the rest). The recce color also varied according to time...The later recce units comprised troops fom Motorcyc...

Think this caption is incorrect. -should read "HG troops in training france 1942". The records indicate smocks issued in summer 1942, in limited amounts (about 5K) to forward combat units only (Peterson prints this order in his book on HG) No other evidence that HG got any other issue of t...

David I thought the NON reversible Heer camo anoraks were late produced 1944/45. the white had proved ineffective due to getting too dirty. Most I think were the later camo- Tan water (sumpfmuster)
