Flags of Our Fathers
I was never ashamed of my German heritage or of my father's service in the German Army. Dad's new country was very good to him and us. It was very challenging at times growing up as the son of a German soldier. I remember school mates talking about their fathers and what they did in the war. When as...

Humiliation
At least these woman were given a choice. German women were raped wholesale in the east. I believe everyone of my aunts were raped. It wasn't spoken of. One of my more outspoken aunts told me she realized what she was in for when the Russians came. She decided to have some control over her life in t...

Hair
Not really. Kind of tame compared to my experience in the reserves. A lot of guys were shaved completely. You just got tired of getting frequent haircuts to keep it short. Plus haircuts can add up in cost. It's better just to cut it all off and be done with it.

Hi Dragunov, My father was an east front guy. The only photo I have of him from the war shows a pretty normal hair cut. Short, but nothing severe. In fact, he has the big curly wave thing across the top of his head. I asked him once about hair length regulations in the German Army during the war. He...

Troops riding tanks into battle
Hi all, Good discussion. Thanks. I have no personal experience and have to rely on what my father told me. He was German infantry during the war. Russian front. Dad was watching a war movie on the TV and said it was all nonsense. The particular scene showed German soldiers running along side tanks i...

Troops riding tanks into battle
I've seen documentaries about the Eastern Front and noted that troops riding tanks into battle are usually Russian. German troops on tanks are usually depicted on a road as part of a convoy travelling somewhere. The movies show Allied and Axies troops riding tanks, hiding behind tanks, and running a...

PTSD
I have read as well that prolonged exposure to combat results in PTSD and that treatment including getting these guys back into their units. I think one has to realize that circumstances in the German Army were very different than its counterparts. German soldiers were not rotated out as often and h...

German parents looking for MIAs
I have a photograph from a newpaper article of my grandfather in a city park in Germany. He is holding a sign with a list of his sons who are MIA. The sign starts off asking, "Who has seen my children?" I am told that this was a common practise in post-war Germany. I can't imagine how sad ...

Hi Carl, My father was German infantry on the Eastern Front for about three years. He saw a lot of combat. He was a POW for about another five years. My father was released in about 1950. The Red Cross and western powers were protesting considerably about the poor condition and small numbers of Germ...

Military Tattoos
Hi, doesn't look like a lot of interest so far. My father had tattoos from the war. He was German infantry. He had a large tattoo of a ship's anchor superimposed over a heart on his chest and a smaller version on his left forearm. He was nervous about them and didn't like to show them. He would go s...

Malaria in Ukraine/Crimea?
I have never heard anything about German troops contracting Malaria during duty in Ukraine/Crimea. My father suffered an episode of Malaria in about 1974. We were living in Canada and had never been to the tropics. He was a veteran of the German Heer and had served with the 6th Army (post Stalingrad...

No Man Left Behind?
Just for the record; my father died in 1986. A funny story. My father had a sense of humour. Dad said it wasn't always terrible. I think he liked to party and could be a bit rowdy. Dad could drink with the best of them. He said he woke up in the custody of the military police more than once. Dad sai...

No man left behind?
Regarding sleep, my father was always nasty and foul if woken up. We kids used to argue about whose turn it was to wake him up. Dad could fall asleep at any time and in any position. I thought it odd until I joined the army reserves. Sleep is something you don't get during training and field exercis...

No man left behind?
Hi Panzerschreck1, Yeah, I've got a lot of my father's stories in my head. I listened when he talked about the war. He didn't usually, but was freer with the information when he had a few drinks. I would press him for the stories when he was receptive. Regarding killing a wounded comrade, I remember...
