Re: A Sentence and a Word.
Thank you, Fridgeman! (Ich bedanke mich.) The 'Eierwaeldchen' had a sort of fairy-tale ring to it. I thought of Easter too. It is from a WWII LW Observer's recon report, referring to a small 'copse' of woods I think--so far--it is safe to assume. Thanks too on the sentence. We'll see what still come...

A Sentence and a Word.
Hello! I need your input for a sentence and a word from a wartime historic translation. The sentence appears fairly straightforward but has a couple trick words. "Es konnte nur 1/4 Stunden geschossen werden wegen anhaltender fdl. Jagdabwehr." The word I need input on is: "Eierwaeldche...

Re: The Battle for Konigsberg
Thank you for the input. I must kindly ask that my cousin be kept out of this, especially regarding whether his memory is faulty. The inquiry has been mine and mine alone, I take full responsibility for it. Other than the fact he was there in the Kessel, I respect the family and individual courtesy ...

Re: Help needed understanding Uncles information
Hello, and my compliments on your on-going research. "Schuetze" was also considered the word for private rank; I would guess your uncle's "schuetze" time was his basic training time, and the other training stints similar to U.S. military's "advanced infantry training." ...

Re: meaning of chevrons on left sleeve ? (Waffen-SS)
Correct. A certain chevron similar to Gefreiter was worn on the right sleeve; it was to signify the wearer was considered an "Altkaempfer" or "old fighter", a single-chevron stripe distinction created for the longtime members of the Nazi Party. You will see photos of old Nazi sup...

Re: Famous photograph, what is his story?
There is an issue of AFTER THE BATTLE magazine--unfortunately I am away from my resources as I write, or I would give the exact issue number--that takes up the question of this soldier's identity. Remembering from the article, a re-enacting group (British?) set out to recreate this exact series of s...

Re: The Battle for Konigsberg
Ya, there was actually quite a lot of Wehrmacht railroad traffic across Sweden to Norway, and a lot of resupply shipping to the Germans in Lappland. Germany bought big on the Swedish ore and ball bearing markets too. Perhaps my cousin's outfit was refitted somewhere other than on Swedish soil, with ...

Re: Translator Wanted (German to English)
Hi-
I've tried going through your pm e-mail address to no avail.
Could you pm me here at Feldgrau?
I've done some WKII era translating, and I'd like more info on your project: documents,
KTB , related, also mass of the doc's and is this part of a contract project.
Thanks-
Enzian

Re: What was the formal name for Nazi Germany?...
Greater Germany--"Grossdeutschland" was used some. Maybe also "das Reich"? Or simply "Vaterland." Probably depended on the particular use at hand; funeral announcement, newspaper, propaganda or a particular social group.

Contact: Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt) Eichborndamm 179 13403 Berlin tel. (030) 41904-169 This contact works for next of kin. Give them his full name--they'll be able to give you his military outfit particulars, where and when stationed. They do not have info on POW time. Some of their info is also s...

Re: The Battle for Konigsberg
Thanks to you both--I now have something to go on for more/wider info. My cousin was there (Gefr./K8/IR162/ID61). Following the collapse of the long-fighting Festung at Koenigsberg, he began what would be 10 years captivity in the Russian camps. I also believe his outfit took part in one of the last...

We all know the 'tale' of curiousity and the cat. Am wondering what you are asking for the 5.Gebirgs collection; it sounds like a fantastic grouping. Must be hard to part with.

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion
Ja- Fridgeman makes a good point about the youth of immediate postwar germany wanting to get out, some for military adventure. Take a look at the Guenter Grass book, "Peeling the Onion", his excellent memoir of his early years: He was, to the relative surprise of many in and out of the lit...

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion
Folks- An interesting topic. I recall a conversation I had with an American US Navy vet who re-upped with the Navy in late 1940s through the early 1950s. He went to aviation, flying recon/spying missions in the Med/Balkan area. A base area they frequently used was in Agadir, Morocco. My friend comme...
