Re: Messy compound sentence

German is not my native language, but based on my self-thought knowledge,I will give it a try: 'With the consideration of the strict command of Model - although hardly justified -, the division performed an duel mission to continue the attack on Stopce to seal of the Usca-section of the railroad to ...

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion

Fridgeman, I get your criticism en maybe even agree with you. The conclusion in my paper had to be based on evidence I found in sources, because I read a lot of conflicting accounts I had to be careful and a bit political in my conclusion. The main difficulty was to give a value to for example what ...

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion

I already finished my paper, but want to keep my eyes open for more leads on this story. Maybe it’s useful for a project in the future. Again, thanks for all reactions. Bil, the book you’re referring to is called ‘The Survivor the Story of Eddy Hukov’ by John Ehle. It seems to be a biography and not...

Re: Kreigsmarine U-boats and Nazi-Soviet Pact

No problem, glad to be of help. When I searched for 'Polarnoje' in Google Maps it suggested 'Polyarny, Moermansk oblast, Rusland'. I think that's the place you're looking for because it's location makes the use by the Germans seem logical and it was a military base for Soviet submarine's in the 1950...

Re: Kreigsmarine U-boats and Nazi-Soviet Pact

Raeder didn't wrote chronologically, so in the chapter Unternehmen Barbarossa he writes a bit more on the Soviet bases. This time it's a bit to much to quote (about 2/3 page) so I will paraphrase it for you. Send me a PM for more details. Reader writes that the port of Polarnoje on the Murmansk-coas...

Re: Kreigsmarine U-boats and Nazi-Soviet Pact

Hi Alan, Good news: Raeder mentions it, although only briefly. He confirms the excistence of support facilities in the Soviet-Union when he writes about the considerations for the invasion of Norway. He thought that it might have been possible to obtain these facilities in Norway by political negoti...

Re: Kreigsmarine U-boats and Nazi-Soviet Pact

I just checked the books I have concerning the U-boot-war, but couldn't find anything about U-boats in Soviet ports. Also I can't think of a good reason for this kind of cooperation because U-boots where mainly operating in the Atlantic at the beginning of the war and not close to Soviet bases. The ...

Re: Submarine "bow shot" as depicted in "Run Silent, Run Deep"

I haven't seen the movie you're talking about, but I have read a lot about on U-boots and the Battle of the Atlantic. Ideally the goal was to shoot a torpedo from an angle of 90 degrees because that gives to greatest chance of hit. Hitting a ship dead on was probably an exception, but I can't give y...

Re: 42. Jager Division

In German order of battle Samuel W. Mitcham writes the following concerning this division in 1944-1945: 'In March 1944, it took part in the occupation of Hungary but was back in northern Yugoslavia by May. Shortly afterward it was transferred to Genoa, northern Italy, and was in combat in the Gothic...

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion

The history of POW is just starting to become a field of research as far as I'm concerned. The course you are taking seems an interesting one does it have a particular time frame? I am always amazed with the parallels between the way the Troupes de la marine and local defence forces in Vietnam were...

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion

@ John Moore: I couldn't agree with you more. I think that bad treatment in POW-camps was widespread, but that this was not done with the purpose of getting Germans to join the Legion. The living conditions in all camps, both of the Axis and Allies, were not ideal and the situation did not improve a...

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion

@ Fridgeman: I've tried to find those three books, but none of them are available in The Netherlands; nowhere on sale or for loan at any library. In Germany there are still quite a lot of copy's around, so mayble I can buy one from there. Thanks for the suggestion. @John: That's the kind of story I'...

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion

Hi Eric, I'm unable to give you the name of any memoirs but I thought you might want to know that the Germans had an entire regiment the 361st 'Afrika' Infantry Regiment that was raised in North Africa from Germans serving in the Foreign Legion that the Vichy government had repatriated. I don't kno...

Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion

I'm currently writing a small paper about the way German soldiers were recruited for the French Foreign Legion after the war to fight in Indochina. I have found quite a lot of books and studies relating this subject, but am still searching for memoirs of German soldiers who went to Indochina. Becaus...
