herauslösen

I think the following is a better translation for "herauslösen": He ordered the Gauleiters "not to remove proven National Socialists, who are serving as officers in the Wehrmacht, from military service for duties in the Volkssturm, because it (the Volkssturm) is to be composed solely ...

Henckels Solingen

Solingen is in Lower Saxony. In terms of cutlery manufacture in Germany, it is the equivalent of, say, Sheffield in the UK. J.A. Henckles, therefore, might be a knife manufacturer from Solingen. The "25" might be an anniversary of some kind (promoting Gebelein? - whatever that is - a comp...

Privately purchased weapons

Permission to carry a privately purchased weapon was not automatic and had to be granted in the Wehrmacht. This practice was usually limited to officers and, less frequently, NCOs.

Details of the privately purchased weapon and permission to carry it were usually entered in the Soldbuch.

MP 40 in the post-war Norwegian army

Hi, As far as I know, the MP 40 was still in use as a back-up weapon by Norwegian AFV crews in the 1980's, however, I don't know whether they were from regular or reserve units. Norwegian leather magazine pouches for three magazines turn up regularly on eBay and at gun shows. Replacement plastic gri...

MG 34 leaflet

Hi, I have an overview of the MG 34 that was used for instruction purposes. The front page looks like this: http://www.zeltbahn.net/new/wa32_33.jpg . Is this what you are looking for? Or do you mean the sort of detailed information on using, caring for and field stripping standard weapons such as in...

Identity W-SS KC+Oakleaves holder killed in Falaise pocket

I have posted an identification request concerning an unknown Waffen-SS officer and KC/Oakleaves holder who is believed to have been killed during an attempt to break out of the Falaise pocket in the "Personalities and Award Holders" forum. As I don't want to double post the request here, ...

Identity W-SS KC+Oakleaves holder killed in Falaise pocket

While recently talking to an army Pionier and artillery vet about his experiences during the war, he told me that he spent a short time in a mixed group including a Waffen-SS tank commander and holder of the KC with Oakleaves in Normandy. The officer in question (name unknown or forgotten) is believ...

Spare heads for reloading in the field?

Chris, Judging by the way they are made, reloading the launcher tube is a job that can only be done under controlled workshop conditions. In order to fit the fuze to render the head live, the head had to be removed from the guide fin assembly, which was retained in the launcher tube by the split pin...

Reloading PzFst

No issued models of Panzerfaust were designed to be reloaded in the field. Further development of the final experimental type 250 m, with extended range and a reloading capability, was not concluded in Germany before the war ended. Trial samples were completed in the US under the supervision of the ...

German/English divisional history

As far as I know, the divisional history is available in English.

You would probably be doing yourself a favour by getting it, at least to avoid a few complete misunderstandings, and the original text and the translation would help you familiarise yourself with the language.

Sturmgewehr 44 in post-war use

The reference above to a lack of AK47s for portrayal of East German forces is not entirely correct. Like other items of wartime ordnance, the StG family of weapons continued to be used by the East German armed forces, police units and workers militias for some time after the war. Some of the better ...

Examples and photos of Italian camouflage in use

Hi, This was discussed in a thread last year which can be found at http://www.feldgrau.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24&start=15 . If you want to see some examples of Italian camouflage in use, take a look at the images on my (as yet one and only!) gallery page at http://www.zeltbahn.net/pol_gal.ht...

Message for dmv about tent poles

Hi Dave, I replied to your e-mail but the message just keeps bouncing back. I attach the reply below: The pole arrangement depends on the size of the eye(s) at the top of the tent. In theory, the sharp end of the pole should be in or on the ground with something underneath it to stop it sinking in t...

How to ...

Hi Dave,

Take a look at http://www.zeltbahn.net/tent.htm. Most of what you need is shown or written there, the rest should be fairly self-explanatory.

I still look forward to seeing pictures of any attempts to build a tent like the structure in the coloured photo above.

Regards,

David

Wilhelm Tieke - SS-Panzerbrigade Westfalen

Hi, Wilhem Tieke privately published a 70-page booklet entitled "Aufstellung, Einsatz und Untergang der SS-Panzerbrigade 'Westfalen'" in March 1990. Rather badly-made copies of it turn up on eBay quite regularly. Tieke was a member of the brigade. There are also some articles in "Der ...
