I am back, for now

My ban has been lifted. I am just stopping by to say hi. I doubt I will post much on this forum now, but occasionally when I have a query concerning a book I am contemplating purchasing, I might come around.
Hope to hear from friends and well-wishers, whoever they may be.

Are You Smarther than a Fifth Grader?

Has anyone seen this? I have seen excerpts, and cannot help but think it is scripted. This schmuck of a Cowboys fan did not know that 0 C degrees is 32 F: http://video.aol.com/partner/hulu/are-you-smarter-than-a-5th-grader-dallas-cowboys-cheerleaders/IQEp2n8YJzKAQrkLrIrnCtyWCa_PgxeR I have a hunch t...

I saw the program. Better than most. The show really was NOT a program on the Waffen SS, but rather the weaponry and equipment of the Waffen SS. In this way, I really do not understand why the show was simply not a program about the weaponry of the Heer and Waffen SS since all the equipment they sho...

I have been listening toa lot of Funker Vogt while lifiting. Gets me dialed in everytime. Other favorites: Wappenbund, Feindflug, der Blutharsch, die Form, das Ich. One song has been in heavy rotation: "Frieda: deine sinde die Rosen,' with thoughts of a lovely named Claudia, of course.

A good rule of thumb is - quite simply, Holywood doesn't do good history. As a medium of information broadcast as well as entertainment, film is over a hundred years old now. Its marketing processes, its knowledge of the market, its skill at exploiting the public's want for entertainment and compro...

One other thing Phylo--after revieiwng the thread, you said I am concerned with history whereas Herzog is concerned with filmmaking. The problem is that the film presents itself as "the incredible true story of Dengler." In this way, the movie palms itself off as being concerned with histo...

EW I didn't say your comment was two-dimensional, just the view  Nor did I mistake it for approval LOL But you've just confirmed that you DO have the same idea of how Holywood operates... So here's a question - why did you expect any better in this case? I think you are splitting hairs...

No actuallly I believe you are slow. In condeming my comment as two-dimensional you mistake understanding for approval. I understand all too well how Hollywood works. As you say, things are profit driven. I would not be surprised if they had focus groups on different plot scenarios. That I understan...

Phylo--are you slow? You keep obfuscating the ISSUE. THe issue is they used this man's name, portraying him in an unflattering light that is contrary to uncontroverted testimony. I really do not see how the real facts would be a "turkey." The real story would probably be more compelling. B...

Phylo Quite frankly, your "point" is really baseless and contributes nothing. There are reams of written testimony showing the memory of this man was defamed. As for your rant about what is expected so many years after the fact, if you want to tell sell a fictional story fine, but do not u...

It's the old "Blake's Seven"-style Time Dilation Factor. As the years go by, and people's impressions of events changeaccording to how THEIR minds interpret events, and thus what is needed to put bums on seats changes to match and feed those impressions/expectations. The closer a real-lif...

Well normally, I don't. If Hollywood wants to embellish the story of Erin Brokovich or Jan Schlichtmann for better or for worse, it is much less consequential to me; indeed I could really care less as I would not bother to watch either of those movies. But when something defames the memory of a POW ...

Rescue Dawn and Hollywood's Adulteration of Truth

I watched Rescue Dawn , directed by one of my personal favorites, Werner Herzog. On its own terms the movie, standing by itself, the movie was actually quite compelling. On a second viewing, I took a time out to try and find out how long he was in prison. Then I discovered that the plot, supposedly ...

As another contributor pointed out, this conflict is of a nature that is foreign to the Western mind. Traditional carrot or stick measures, ranging from reprisals for terrorist attacks to the Marshall Plan, really do not apply. The reason is because the Arab-Muslim mind is foreign to ours. Given tha...
