Sid I agree with you - honour is not inherited - but the memory of a life lived is! I really don't care about the medals -and certainly he (Opa) wouldn't either- he ditched them well and truly before migrating - I do however, care about his story being told (and in my situation to his great-grandson...

Thank you guys - your responses have been very informative - minatures sound like the go - Its interesting, you know - my Opa was conscripted - yet, he and many others, suffer the consequences of this - Governments send their young men to face death - yet they do not allow relatives to recognise and...

I cannot comprehend how mother Niland must have felt - as a mother of 3 sons for me, the loss would be too terrible...Has there ever been any writing about her thoughts and opinions - has anyone ever told her story?

I have an odd question (one that is hard to ask)...

In Australia, war veterans (or members of the family) can apply for the issue of war service medals - an in some instances, I believe, can have them replaced. Can the same occur for German veterans (and their families)... I have often wondered, but never had the confidence to actually ask. My Opa wa...

I collect memories - old photos at the moment, some time ago little plates or cigarette trays with place names and images - I even have a few post cards sent by people from the days of old...I like to image their lives - their challenges - I guess I like to spend my spare time in the imaginary (base...

Leading Author of Anti-war themes

Who is today's leading Author of anti-war themes/sentiment? I was thinking about "All Quiet On The Western Front" when discussing a photograph that I posted on Feldgrau (see photogrpah section of discussion) and I wondered whether anyone has been as successful since Erich Maria Remarque (1...

The Sewer Rats

It's been some time since I last visited Feldgrau - I am curious to know if the "Sewer Rats" are still around - I remember a few years ago enjoying the many and varied discussions generated by the sewer rats - I wonder, are you still out there???

Thank you forum comrades - interestingly I had managed to track down further information about Hermann Nuebert and knew that he is now burried at Kriegsgräberstätte in Noyers-Pont-Maugis (France). The Germans keep such wonderful records - I do not speak German but by using "Babelfish.com",...

Thank you, my forum comrades - with this information I will do some more researching and attempt to put together a bit of a fanciful story - a story that will help us remember and respect all men of war.

Have you read the novel "All Quiet on The Western Front"? I know that this is set in WW1 - but I think of the young men in the story (as told by the main character Paul Baumer) when I look at this photo, I picture the many young men who died because of their blind faith in those who govern...
