Re: both Majore i.G. Heitsch

In this case the records are obviously mixing up the two officers. American records I have copies of (a list of captured GSOs) lists JOACHIM as being captured at Brest in Sept 44 while serving as Ia, 343. ID. Oberst Rudolf Kogard was the Ia until 18 August and wrote a narrative history of the unit a...

Re: Maj. i.G. Dittmar

I see no contradiction in these records. Gerd Dittmar was Ia, I. AK, from 25 Jun 44 to 10 Jan 45. He was replaced by Major iG Paul DENSIEN, the corps Qu (G4) on a temporary basis until 25 Jan 45. The permanent replacement was Major iG Bernd Bosselmann, a more senior officer. The I Corps was trapped ...

Re: Erwin von Rommel - career history

several points fro mthe above discourse: NO Germans were anyewhere near Dunkirk in MARCH 1940. The offensive began in MAY 1940. Secondly, the career history of Rommel has a discrepancy. Supposedly he received the Blue Max after he was promoted to Hauptmann if you match the dates for his promotion an...

Re: Major Joachim-Wilhelm Freiherr von Maltzahn

The comments in this thread about the use of new General Staff officiers are inaccurate. While Ib (Supply) in a division was the usual novice posting, by 1944-5, there were not enough GSOs to fill all the positions so GS trainees were used instead in many cases. Corps or div Ia became the new starte...

Re: Siegfried Knappe?

Knappe was in 1/24 Artillery of the 24th ID in the prewar Army. However, upon mobilization 20 percent of the unit was used as cadre for a 2d Wave division, the 87th, which was staffed with reservists. Knappe was part of the 20 percent. Accordingly Knappe served in France and Russia with 1/187 Arty. ...

Re: Rittmeister Behrendt and Heer in Kurland

Below is info on Major Behrendt from the German official records. A little background: I am compiling a master roster of General Staff Corps officers as part of a larger research project. No such current comprehensive listings exist. The Germans produced two major GSO lists during the war [at least ...
