Re: Sniper Tallies
Hallo, actual the germans need an at least an NCO who confirms a hit. Thats why the german snipers had less hits counted in proportion to the russians. It was only allowed (and possible to be carried out) in defense situations. But on the other hand most hits would be done in offence action, for ex...

Re: KMS Bismarck and KMS Prinz Eugen

Hi,Rolf! Jaeger units could be classified as light infantry,or even better, light mountain units. The unit in question here, 118. jaeger division, also fought in Bosnia (operation "Schwartz" for instance) prior to the Adriatic theathre, which means it was proven in combat over tough, mountain t...

Re: POW status of merchant seamen...
Hi,phylo.
Since merchant ships were confirmed as military targets at the Nueremberg trial, according to that I would assume merchant seamen were regular POW, same as soldiers. But I am not sure if this is so in the pre war conventions.

Re: Croatia??
Cool. Wehrmacht held a small garrisson on the island of Brac 'cuz the highest hill on the island (Vidova gora) dominates the whole area and makes an excellent control point. I have a funny story. Some years ago I went to Altenmarkt,Austria to ski in the winter.I slept in the appartments and the owner...

Re: KMS Bismarck and KMS Prinz Eugen
I think that Lutjens,or whoever made this decision, was right when he let go Prinz Eugen, especially after Bismarck's rudder was hit by a torpedo.Even though the german ships might have inflicted some damage and put up a good fight, they couldn't stand a chance against the bulk of the Home Fleet.

No,nothing went "german" in Croatia before the April 10th, except that part of the population favoured the Germans.

Re: SS Handzar and cufftitle ???
Hi!
You have a good, detailed analysis of SS Handzar in a croatian military history magazine "Husar" (if you are really a Slovenian and you can read Croatian).Thay already had a couple of stories about SS Handzar division in the past issues.

Re: Major Koenig
I believe I have read Zaitsev's account of this encounter with the german sniper believed to be Koenig (or whoever) in a book called "Sniper" (I think the author's name is Adrian Gilbert but I am not certain).Maybe Zaitsev is just describing one of the encounters with the german sniper in ...

Russian sniper kills weren't confirmed by NCO or the officer, they were confirmed by an observer who usually accompanied the shooter.

Re: Best tank in WWII?
Hi,phylo. I am not convinced.Maybe it's because of my experience of traveling thru eastern Europe and some adventure trips above the polar circle that it's hard for me to believe in what you're supporting with so many arguments.I have never been to North Africa. But I must say I have often thought of...
