Re: Hitler's high seas fleet

Scharnhorst's switch-over was actually an elaborate affair as it added roughly 1000 tons of armament weight. The turrets required increased structural support, and the bow had to be lengthened by 10m. The international situation wasn't such that the ships could be easily docked for the conversion. T...

Grille was good for 26 knots--as long as her boilers weren't blowing a tube.

During the Battle of River Plate, Graf Spee's top speed was down to 24 knots. But presumably in this scenario, Scheer would be more regularly serviced.

And that photo gallery on Soviet cruisers--simply brilliant, don't you think?

What was the ship that served in the Storch deck-landing trials, and what arrangements were made?

I thought that there was a larger bomb available at just over 1100lbs but I'm more than likely wrong?
Not for the Skua. How did they feel about using Swordfish as bombers?

Only Skuas: eleven from 803 Squadron and five from 800 squadron. The confines of the harbor precluded torpedo attack.

The traditional high-seas raider concept was plummeting toward obsolescence. The introduction of steam propulsion struck the first blow in the 19th Century, greatly shrinking the autonomy of any warship. Then in the 1890's, new armor made it possible for a fast ship to be protected against cruiser-c...

Re: Highly Theoretical--Commerce Raiding!

Prinz Eugen is unsuited to the role due to her temperamental machinery. Both ships have nominally sufficient range, I suppose.

The ships in a fleet should be tailored to perform a necessary function. There was no such function for a German aircraft carrier. Had the Germans completed an aircraft carrier, they would have been in the awkward position of trying to find a job to fit their tool, rather than the other way around. ...

Is it possible to sue the Wiki people for the plague they have visited upon mankind? You are correctly pointing out some of Hood's flaws. And your claim that the decision to complete her was a dubious one (even with the upgrades) has substance. My only beef is in positioning the argument in the cont...

At least we now know where the problem lies. Cutting and pasting from Wikipedia is not likely to advance the conversation. You've wasted your time giving a bunch of details that do not address the point of focus, your claim that Hood was destroyed via a uniquely BC-ish quality. In fact, most of what...
