Oil Bombs
Hi Yes Oil Bombs did exist and were used by Lufwaffe - and the RAF most certainly had the same sort of thing in its arsenal pre-war. The RAF bomb was a 30lb device filled with a petrol benzol mixture. Experiments were also carried out with a 250lb device containing - believe it or not - a mixture of...

German troopship sunk September 1940
Hello everyone. I came across a British Admiralty report concerning the submarine HMS Sturgeon. Around the beginning of September 1940 the Sturgeon torpedoed a German troop transport in the Skaggerak, there was much loss of life. In the newspapers at the time the troopship was referred to as 'the Ma...

Hi Phylo, Definitely sounds like the film SAN DEMETRIO LONDON. Produced in 1943 by Ealing Studios, (Micheal Balcon). A British WW2 'flagwaver', but for all that a well produced film shot in what would now be called a documentry style, very realistic. Stars amongst others Mervyn Johns, and a youthful...

III Battalion Brandenburgers Company 11
While doing some reading up on this, apparently 100 strong, unit comprised of English speaking Germans found myself puzzled.
Two references refer to this unit as 'Pioneerbattalion 303' but in another book it is called 'Pioneerbattalion 909'
Can anyone clear things up for me ?
Thanks, Ron C.

Paratroops disguised as nuns
Hello everyone Phylo, thanks for getting back with the book title I'll try and get hold of a copy. Lorenz, it is always difficult to provide absolute proof in such matters, but, if you can get down to the National Archives at Kew in London check out the following documents : WO 166/449 WO 208/2257 H...

Hello everyone, It's been a while since I submitted this posting. Thanks for the additional information everyone. Phylo If you could post the title of the book you refer to that would be great. Originally, as can be seen from my second post, I accepted the view held by many that such stories were ci...

WW1 German Naval raids on British coast
Hello everyone. This may be slightly off topic however here goes. I've read about the German High Sea's Fleet bombardment of some British coastal towns, Scarborough, Hartlepool etc in December 1914, and I think Yarmouth later in 1915. While I understand that these actions were primarily aimed at dra...

Polish Cavalry charging German Armour
Hi everyone. Yes I know it really didn't happen but I read a posting on this forum sometime ago that explained the basis for this story. The posting described what happened, where it happened and precisely when it happened. It was, I believe, initially an attack by the Poles on a German Infantry or ...

Air Division 7
Hello everyone, I came across references to this Division in some recent research and would be obliged if anyone can tell me anything about it. Was it a Fallschirmjager or an Air Landing Div, or a mixture of both? Where would I find any further sources of information such as make up of the Division ...

Study Red and Study Northwest
Hi everyone. To be honest this is a post about a theoretical campaign, in other words a feasibilty study, or in this case two studies. Just reading the Egbert Kieser book 'Operation Sealion' and the author mentions two studies. STUDY RED, a Kriegsmarine study ordered by Admiral Raeder in November 19...

Captain Reinicke and Major Stieff
Hello everyone, I'm trying to find out a bit more about these two Officers and the work they were involved in. Captain Reinicke was part of a team ordered by Admiral Reader to carry out STUDY RED in November 1939. Do files containing information about this Study exist or where could I get further in...

XXXVII HIGHER COMMAND
Hello everyone. I came across reference to this while reading the excellent book INVASION OF ENGLAND 1940, by Peter Schenk. This particular Army Group, ( if that is what Higher Command means ), was based in the Netherlands in the Summer of 1940 and apparently included the 197th Infantry Division and...

German Naval Mines
Hello Redcoat. Yes you are right about the minelaying. The Esk, Ivanhoe and Express were part of the 20th Minelaying Flotilla and along with the Icarus and the Intrepid were indeed engaged in laying an offensive minefield off the Dutch coast. The ships were being escorted by the Jupiter, Kelvin and ...
